This is unlikely to be a problem with your machine. Some ISPs and some email servers get rebooted or go "offline" and the users see this.

I would not fix your machine!

I had to disable the firewall in Norton in order to get a connection to the interent and for Outlook 2004. My ISP said that SP-2 has a firewall and nothing can get through that firewall & additional firewalls provided thru my ISP and Outlook, etc. That worked for me. Good Luck. I don't know why Microsoft puts out something that causes so many awful problems. It is a never-ending problem RE: SP-2, I wish I could delete it out of my computer safely.

I think you got the standard answer from your ISP provider of "DUH" We'll blame something else....

NIF and M/S firewall are configurable, all good firewalls are. My problem with SP2 is with IE, when I use it. Totally intrusive at the default security current settings. Going to be a lot more systems attacked as users lower the security settings.

Call your ISP.

you might try logging off, rather than re-booting, which has worked for me under the same circumstances.
I have a problem where if I try to click on an embedded e-mail response on a WEBPAGE, my whole computer hangs up since I did the XP2 update...
still don't have a solution..
