I have a friend who has an IMAC. She says that when she types nothing will show up. Example -- she will depress a C on the keyboard and nothing will happen. She says if she presses it several times, a couple of the characters will appear but she is unable to type a letter.
Is she ready for a new keyboard?
Thank you.

OK Robert Proffitt --- do you mean by a techie like at a PC repair shop ---- or is there someplace she can go to find about the "cheap" fix?
Mac keyboards are not too expensive compared to a trip to the shop. Sorry if I wasn't too obvious, but...
Buy a mac keyboard and try it.

Even cheaper, before you buy a new keyboard, check your USB connections...
If there is a bad connection, some keystrokes will get through and some won't. Same thing with your mouse... I find this is especially true with hubs, particularly unpowered hubs...
I work in a very dusty environment and have problems with this, all the time. If this is the problem, buying a new keyboard won't help.,
MT, One of my fiends and co-workers has a problem with the mouse on her I-Mac that is a year old. She has a USB setup. When she clicks on the mouse curser and goes to the left hand top of her screen, the curser appears down to the lower right hand side of her screen.
DIRTY MOUSE or Dirty USB connections?
Another common problem is that you may have inadvertently turned accessability option on.
Before committing to buying a new keyboard, try finding another keyboard to plug into her iMac. If that works, then you might need to get a new keyboard or fix the old one. One of the things I do from time to time is tap the edge of my keyboard against a mousepad or some other cushioned surface to dump crumbs and dirt out of the keyboard. It's surprising how much that can effect the way a keyboard works. Sometimes, I'll even pop certain keys off to clean under them. They are usually simple enough to replace after doing so. Just don't let the key go flying off into another dimension when you try this.
