Running Web and Email on the same server

by skent1976 - 1/15/04 11:49 AM

My network is entirely Windows based. That is fine for work but at home I am Macintosh all the way. That being said, my email server at work died today. I set up a temporary server on an XP machine until I decide on what route to go for hardware. Being such an avid user and promoter of Macs, I thought that an Xserve with OS 10.3 would meet my needs perfectly. Postfix with an incredibly easy to use GUI is a beautiful thing, plus I really would like to stay away from Exchange if at all possible.

The question I am getting at is: What security concerns or implications would I run into if I ran Postfix as my email server on OS X and then moved my website to the same machine (using Apache)? By the way, my webserver is also pretty rigged up at the moment (running on Windows XP. LOL!!!). An Xserve isn't cheap but running two services on the same box could help me out a lot.

The same as any other platform. Be aware that I am not any fan of SUN, Apple, or other platform. I work with bean counters and opt for lower costs and higher payback any day of the week, so my feedback is without any religious overtones.

-> Just like any other setup, you need to keep the patches current and look at daily alerts about new or rediscovered security issues. Running on Linux, Apple or other doesn't change this at all.

I understand this. I was just concerned about opening too many ways into one server and the performance that I could expect from such a setup. Our website does not draw a ton of traffic but our email clients are set to autoconnect every 5-10 mins.

Performance.

The usual is to just add RAM. Watch what memory usage monitors you have and see if it's going virtual at times. RAM can be cheaper than two machines.

I have run both email and webservers on a Power Mac G3, running the original Mac OS X Server... That was a while ago. I think the processor speed was 265 mHz... Anyway, at the time, it ran fine. I had several hundred clients and no one complained, although the "standard" for speed on computers was vastly different then than it is now. I think we started out running WEBSTAR as our webserver on a Power PC 601 66 mHz system... Ah, the good ol' days...

I have also run both services on one computer running Mac OS X, SUN Solaris and Linux. I prefer the SUN for speed, Mac OS X for ease of use and, (no offense open source users), Linux for nothing. If I were going to do it again, a Xserve would be a good compromise. And a heck of a lot easier to manage than XP, Solaris or Linux. Although, in the end - even though I have been a diehard Apple user since my first 512K "Fat" Mac - Solaris is, in my opinion, the ultimate OS for running webservers... Even if you do have to do so much from the command line...
