I've seen several recommendations on this forum to use Firewire as the transfer medium from camcorder to PC. However, there also seem to be some problems in getting Windows XP to recognize Firewire-attached camcorders. One discussion mentioned that Firewire is much faster than USB.
Is that a fair comparison for USB 2.0 or was that post comparing Firewire to USB 1.x? It seems that Windows XP is more accomodating to USB connections, so I'd prefer to use USB 2.0 if it is comparable in terms of speed to Firewire. What does everyone advise?
I have both connections and... use the one that works.
I take no sides that either is better.

any problem. It could be that the problems being reported are due to poor application software on the PC (not XP), or errors on the part of the users.
I just purchased a Firewire at installed to Windows XP. I love this because it lets me up load my videos from the cassette in my Camcorder directly to my PC. No quality is lost. I highly recomment a Firewire card, (be sure to get one with a cable and software) I got mine from E Bay and it was cheap...
I am using firewire with my Canon GL2 DVC but I have the Multimedia edition of XP. Perhaps that version is more adept at handling Firewire. I don't know but, perhaps others can shed more light.
I have a Panasonic camcorder that has a firewire port. My PC also has a firewire card.
To transfer video from the Camcorder to the Computer, what should I do other than connect the two using a firewire cable? I have Windows XP on my machine.
What software, if any will I need so that I can transfer videos from my DV tapes over the firewire cable?
hi Vishy you can save money and use the prog. already in win xp, It's called windows movie maker. when you open it just click on, file/capture video and go on from there.
Hi Roody,
I just bought a Canon ZR 85 by ordering it on line and my friend is getting it to INdia next week where I reside. While buying..I did not check much, but today I had time to read about ZR series and seems ZR 85 only has Firewire and no USB for mini DV tape download. Since canon does not offer any Firelink accessories, and that my PC does not have firelink capabiliteis either...what do I need to buy to be able to download video to my PC? would that be hardware for my PC plus a IEEE cable to connect the camcorder to my PC? and also please let me know the approximate price in dollars itcosts to get these. Thx
The camera may come with a cable.
Here are the facts:
USB 2.0 is an external bus that supports data rates up to 480Mbps.
Firewire is an external bus standard that supports data transfer rates of up to 400Mbps (in 1394a) and 800Mbps (in 1394b).
If you have USB 2.0 already, dont bother with the firewire card, and vice versa.
Firewire is unquestionably faster. I also had trouble with usb recognizing my Sony camcorder. Firewire recognized it immediatly.
I have both cards and I know for a fact that Firewire is good for my Sony TRV38 compared to USB just because the output from the camera is USB1.1 .
I have XP home and was wondering if anyone is having issues transferring using firewire. I have recently bought the VIA chipset firewire card. But when i use the windows movie maker it says class not found.
i have taken updates and just installed the dreaded SP2 but not luck. Please let me know if any one was able to successfully tranfer video after issues.
Does anyone know about Firewire to USB cable ?

I suspected that the camcorder was limited to USB 1.0 and that was why I was getting a choppy video capture. this definitely would explain why, though firewire and USB 2.0 are very similar in max bandwith, video capture is poor using the usb interface on this thing. I have the Sony MiniDV DCR-TRV19 (which also has ilink) running XP with USB 2.0.
can anyone verify this so that I can drop $10 on a firewire PCi card and be done woith this hassle? thanks.
yes u r true that USB 2 i smuch master the fire wire but with fire wire u can control ur hanycam.. u can play stop and do any type of work on camera like batch capture and other things .. this all are not available for USB.. thts the main diff.

Seems like the moment you write a statement, someone will refute it. In other words, my JVC does that...
