CAN ANYONE SUGGEST A GOOD BACKUP PROGRAM TO USE WITH MY OS 10 NEW IMAC(PANTHER).THANKS
You can join .Mac (see tab at www.apple.com) and you will be able to recieve their Backup software for free (except for the .Mac subscription).
cbybee, Great suggestion! Works for me!
Thanks
If you subscribe to .mac you have Backup - a program which I use. I find it very easy and convenient to use. If you wish another choice, I suggest Dantz Retrospect.
There is a free back up utility with the .mac subscription and also Carbon Copy Cloner a UNIX utility with an Aqua GUI available at:

In our office, we use Retrospect and a tape back-up storage system. Retrospect can also backup on DVD, if you like. One system is the master, and all other clients must have the retrospect control installed under root authority. This works well in our scientific establishment.
I think that it depends on the hardware that you choose to use. For example, I purchased a Maxtor One Touch drive that comes with Dantz Retrospect. After setting up the drive and initiating the process, my backups are smooth. The one thing I do note, however, is that you must instruct Retrospect NOT to backup files untouched since the prior backup, or you will find multiple copies of the same applications / files eating up space on your drive. Hope this helps.
I've recently bought Prosoft Engineering's Data Backup for Mac OS X for my daughter's iBook. I'm not sure if she's used it yet, so I can't say anything about ease of use or effectiveness, but maybe someone else knows more about it.
A shareware program called Superduper is good. Carbon Copy Cloner is a bit more difficult, but also very good. These are both bootable apps. If you want strictly data backup, .Mac has an app called Backup 2 that works with CDs, Firewire and .Mac online backup with the membeship.
Carbon Copy cloner is freeware
or Personal backup from WWW.intego.com

i think this site has backup software somewhere
www.appcds.com
Nice looking Cocoa-based backup program. It uses GNU tar and preserves resource forks, HFS file types and creators. It can back up to any locally mounted device. You may find Dobry Backuper on http://www.dobrysoft.com
