Thanks for a very comprehensive reply, I will get down to work.
I also ran into this problem with a newer setup. When the reader and writer were hooked up at the same time, Windows would not recognize the two and found the same happening in the BIOS. When only one or the other was hooked up all is fine. I have notified the motherboard vendor and the vendor of the CD drives of the problem. This may also be the case in your situation.
I tried changing the jumpers as well as the cable but .... no result. According to me the problem is with the inf file associated with windows. If u install the inf file ( a floppy - comes with the cd-rom ), it will solve your problem. After doing so if the problem remais the same then format your harddisc and reload it. You'll see ur windows is not detecting ur cd rom but if u boot ur pc with a bootable floppy/cd then u will see ur cd rom. So the problem is of inf file or windows not of jumper or cable
I noticed that the problem is with both cd roms .. and refers to the problem in windows (being intermittant)
do the drives detect in post .. all the time ? and do disks crc check ok From DOS .. if so the cause is more likely to be the software
A corrupt MBR can cause these symptoms ..
the fix is to FIXMBR from XP recovery console
or FDISK /MBR form win 98/ME boot disk
Windows 98 boot floppy can be downloaded from WWW.Bootdisk.com
I too have had this problem from time to time and it turned out to be my Nero 5 software. I would uninstall it and reboot the computer and everything was fine. I then re-installed the software and didn't have the probelm for a few months. I have since gotten the Nero 6 and haven't had that problem again.
I had the intermittent disappearing CD-ROM too. It was caused by EasyCD Creator Software that came installed on my Dell--I had to delete a registry key and get an update from the Roxio website. That was about 4 months ago and I've had no problem since.
When I called Dell tech support, first hardware, then software, they deduced it was an op system issue and said I needed to reformat my hard drive. That made no sense, and neither was too happy when I flat out refused. Anyway, once I was sure it wasn't a hardware or bios issue, I was pretty sure it was related to EasyCD Creator. Software tech support helped me find the conflict in the registry. Once I fixed the registry and updated the software from Roxio, it was fine.
I do have the same problem. I even changed the cd-rom.
But the problem is still there. Finally, I inserted a cd-rom into the drive and rebooted again. Well, it solved the problem, leave a cd inside the drive during booting. I am using Windows XP prof.
After building a computer for my brother and having it run just fine for the first couple of days (mind you this was a brand new motherboard, with brand new DVD/CD ROM drives), Windows decided not to recognize either one of the drives. I tried all the steps previously posted and finally had to reinstall XP. Before registering XP the second time, I installed all of the patches and hotfixes I could find. After having a wonderful (not) conversation with some gal named Julia (who sounded like she was speaking directly from Agra India), and explaining to her that I would not have to require another confirmation number for the Windows XP that I had just registered 2 days prior if XP would stop losing my drives, I got another registration confirmation number. Evidently, the version of Windows XP that I had needed a fix. It's been a month now and there have been no further problems with the drives. If everything is new and everything is connected properly, and you've run through the gamut of prior suggestestions (as well as looking for a hotfix from microsoft), try a clean install.
I have experienced the same problem using Windows XP on Dell GX270's (several systems). This problem was corrected by a bios update. I have same Pc's set up on Windows 2000 and there was not a problem. Perhaps this situation is similar.
If you've got indexing turned on make sure that it's not setup to index your cdrom drive. I had this same problem where cd's wouldn't read (in windows XP) and found that my cd drive was in the list of drives to be indexed. When I turned that off, voila, no more problems.
As pointed out by others, the problem relates to BIOS, and on most if not all motherboards, the BIOS data is maintained with a battery. Like all batteries these ones although long life, do need replacement. How old is your PC and if you remember having replaced it ever. It is possible, both in your case and where the PC clock is slowing down. It could be the battery at the tail end of its life. Replace it and see if the problem goes away.
That's all well and good but what if it happens to your laptop? I'm not taking it apart to look inside!
I'm suprised no one has noted the Code 19 problem. Check Device Manager to see if windows has indicated a problem with the CD drive. If Code 19 is indicated, go to Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 314060 and follow the instructions.
Ok, it's getting downright uncanny how these Q&A's address a problem just as I'm dealing with it. When the subject line "Please stop my CD-ROM drives from disappearing" showed up in my mailbox it was almost spooky -- I'd spent the night before troubleshooting the exact same issue. I'd checked the device manager, swapped out IDE cables, switched power cables around, and still had the intermittent problem. The jumper issue had not occurred to me at all -- and, as it turned out, appears to have been the culprit. All is well now. Thought you might like to know that Rahul M of Auckland is not the only person to have benefitted from your readers' thoughtful replies. Thanks!!!
I’m glad my winning posting concerning this subject helped someone. I deal with these types of problems on a regular basis, especially with mass ROM duplication, for which jumpers are a primary concern. The list of ROM control issues is extensive and growing daily. I’ve viewed all the posts to date, noting each problem and comment, but since the main question was hardware related, my answer was narrowed to that subject, hoping that the problem was not hampered by software or OS interference. Appreciate you letting the forum know that you were helped by my answer.
