Computer newbies: Ram ??

With 32MB RAM, you need an OS that fits that machine.

XP even at 64 MegaBytes(MB) will crawl so slowly that you may scream loudly what a terrible job Microsoft did on this release.
You should run an OS that fits that size OS. I think I ran a copy of PEANUT LINUX on such, but can't remember if I bumped that up to 64MB.
My advice is to not install XP on less than 256.

Wow, you spent 100 dollars on windows xp but you couldn't invest 50 dollars on another 256 megs of RAM? Something doesn't seem right here...are you sure you aren't referring to the memory available on your video card?

....but it appears like you're trying to install XP on an old computer which may have run Windows 95 or earlier. If that's the case, then you'll need to check the motherboard specs to make sure that it can support more RAM and how much more. Personally, if you can't install at least 256 MB, (and it's very possible that you won't be able to do that on an old board) then it's probably not worth the effort. Although XP will putt along on 128 MB, any other installed programs, such as the antivirus, firewall, etc. will need their fair share also. There's just too much drain when you start using graphics or things that require memory. You won't like the result.
In addition, and most importantly, if it's an older computer, it may be impossible to find the drivers for the motherboard or any of the other hardware that came with the original machine. Check with the manufacturer of each device. You'll need to confirm that you have compatible hardware before attempting the install. The link below should help with that:

I strongly suggest you read the requirements for an XP OS install. If you're dealing with an old system, I also suggest you move on to something more capable, as XP won't be happy or you for that matter if only the basic requirements are meant. You may prove it works, but in the long run be perpared for some disapointment. Earlier OS maybe more capable with the system h/w you have, but you didn't mention what that was in the orginal post.
