Why cant anyone make an mp3 player that has AM Radio

by maxtor2002 - 9/8/04 11:04 PM

I have long sought an mp3 player that has both AM and FM Capability. I have not yet found the answer. I am pretty sure if they can put an FM player in an mp3 player, then they can surely put an AM player in it.

If anyone knows of a company that makes it let me know

Here's why. There is a plan in some countries to drop AM off the airwaves and return the spectrum to other use. As such and the issues of a good AM antenna the makers may not see the market.

What you want IS available in Mid East, Far East, India . . . . Only that they use analogue tuning.

Actually the reason is none of the above. The circuitry in MP3 players generates enough interference that putting an AM radio onboard is not feasible. FM radio works because it is much less susceptible to interference.

It is also partly because adding AM radio would add a bit to the size of the unit and because there is relatively little musical content on AM radio.

yeah--am antennas are pretty big--if you've ever seen them in one of those electronic project kits, they're nearly the size of your ring finger-- imagine how much bulk they'll add to today's tiny mp3 players. In fact, the only AM radio mp3 player i've found so far is on a sony minidisc--the only way they're able to accomplish this is by putting the AM antenna inside the remote for the player. They also tell you to keep it away from the minidisc unit itself to keep it away from the interference. The old CD players used to be able to accomplish this, of course, because of the space the size of the cd allowed it to have.

am anteneas aren't all large

that's not true.

I bought an aiwa portable am/fm radio and it's about .7 inches think, 3 inches wide and 2 inches tall. I haven't taken it apart, but it's small indeed.

You are all wrong about AM antennas. I've been using the Sony SRF-M95 & M97 for years, and they have developed a system wherby the earplugs act as the antenna. This makes the unit about the size of a matchbox & delivers excellent sound. All the manufacturers need to do is to add a small MP3 unit and it would still be half the size of an iPod.

It's all a matter of (perceived) commercial need. The target market for mp3 players is 14-30yo.This demographic matches FM listeners. AM radio listeners are traditionally 35yo+. Manufacturers won't start making AM mp3s until they perceive sufficient demand

I want AM Radio 2

by xcuba - 8/8/06 1:23 PM In reply to: Re: Why cant anyone make an mp3 player that has AM Radio by R. Proffitt Moderator

AM Radio is bigger and a more profitable medium than it ever has been.

I agree with the poster. IF they can make it for FM, they can make it for AM.

AM Talk Radio attracts a huge big money demographic.

I want my AM iPod!!! In fact, I want the wireless version to also have <<<XM>>>, wireless pod casting capabilities and eventually a PDA phone built in.

I'd pay 1 thousand dollars for a quality device like this that is fully integrated. Please let me know if there is such a beast.

I don't know about MP3 players but a lot of AM stations are now brodcasting over FM.
Call AM Statiom you want to listen to and ask if they are on FM and the signal it is at.
Hope this helps a bit.

What kind of player are you looking for???

I typed "MP3 player cd am" into my favorite search engine and found all kinds of players..

I listen to AM radio all day at work on my little 30 dollar cd-based mp3 player.
Theres ones for cars, and portables too.
If you still can't find one, let me know the type you desire, I'll find one for you

Thanks for your replies,

I agree with antenna as the reason. Because AM requires a large sized antanna. In order to make the packaging smaller, its probably worth disregarding the AM tuner. However some harddrive mp3 player have enough physical space.

On the other hand I did find an mp3 player, I dont think its available yet. Its called the AIWA AZ-RS128

Check it out at

try the cony mp3/cd players

by nomadh - 12/19/05 10:08 AM In reply to: Re: Why cant anyone make an mp3 player that has AM Radio by GTUCHAY

The AM is very good and the mp3 is outstanding and shakeprook. A little bigger than you may want but still fits in many pockets and very light. Very tough and the cheapest storage media by 1000%.
