I have a powermac G4 with a combo CD writer/DVD rom drive. The tray is failing and will not load, I think something is wrong with the gear. What brand of this drive does Apple use? I would like to just replace it myself with rather than have it serviced but I am not sure what is compatible to use. Both the apple store and CompUsa tell me they don't sell the drive, I would have to have them put it in. Thanks.

Get one of those?

You should be able to find out exactly which one you have using the hardware option on your restore disk, or hardware test disk..
If you contact Apple--you can get a list of local Apple-approved service centers, many of which also sell Mac-compatible hardware, software and peripherals.including a replacement for your optical drive.
You may want to check the dates on threads you reply since...
Some are quite old.
You advice is still sound and appreciated.

MacNetwork in Santa Rosa installed one for me. Don't remember what brand it was, but they can tell you, get one, and install it, whichever of the above you need.
