I've added a second hard drive to my system (Seagate 200 GB, WIndows XP Pro). It's being recognized in the device manager, but does not show up with an associated drive letter in My Computer. I assume it must be formatted, but I only know how to do this given the drive's letter. WHat is the next step to take in installing this hard drive?
Zeke,
Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Mng
Select "Disk Management"
Right-click the new disk -> click Initalize.
You will want to create an extended patition -
then logical partitions.
Click on help in tool bar -> click on index tab -> type in "BASIC DISK" -> click on display. This will do a better job than I can to explian Partitions.

.
Users of over 137GB drives are losing data daily over a simple issue. XP SP1. Here's how.
The user adds an over 137GB and prepares it, puts data on it. Then a day comes along and they format the OS drive and install XP (standard, no SP1) and the over 137GB drive and contents just VANISH.
Just so you know.

1. check if connected devices on same IDE cable, both are master or slave.
2. May be the 2nd HDD is NTFS formatted & your OS is on Fat32 drive.
3. Check if your Bios identifies the new drive
