directx problem

by ejob - 8/21/04 6:35 PM

Hi,

I need some help with DirectPlay, one of DirectX's feature.
After trying to multiplay warcraft3 on my home LAN without success, I checked the dxdiag tool on both computers. On one of my computers everything was OK, but on the other dxdiag says the following: "The file dpwsockx.dll, needed for the service provider 'Internet TCP/IP Connection For DirectPlay', is missing. You should reinstall DirectX. The file dpwsockx.dll, needed for the service provider 'IPX Connection For DirectPlay', is missing. You should reinstall DirectX. The file dpmodemx.dll, needed for the service provider 'Modem Connection For DirectPlay', is missing. You should reinstall DirectX. The file dpmodemx.dll, needed for the service provider 'Serial Connection For DirectPlay', is missing. You should reinstall DirectX. ".

I have downloaded the latest DirectX and installed it several times, even with a clean boot, but the problem still remains. The funny thing is that the above mentioned files are present on my computer.

Any help would be appreciated...

FWIW...

Not only is the DirectX in need of update, but the audio/video drivers. Here's why. From my experience, DirectX's installer takes it cues on what to update/install based on what capabilities the audio/video drivers offer.

Microsoft and/or Windows Update will not do these audio/video driver updates for us.

Hi R.Proffitt,

Are you the 'Itakecareofeverything' person on this board? :) Thanks for replying.
I think the audio and video drivers are fine, because there are no problems with that part of DirectX.
It is also weird that the DirectPlay8 providers are OK,but not the last 4 without DirectPlay8 in their name.

Even Microsoft suggest on their that reinstalling should fix missing files problems. It's a pity I cannot ask support from them, because the OSs are OEM versions.

DirectX cannot be uninstalled? Not even manually? I think a good reinstall would solve the problem.

I can only share from my experience about DX and driver interactions. But about uninstalling DX...

Look up DXBUSTER.
