Best new multi-purpose (computer) speakers?

by Darlox88 - 11/15/09 1:22 AM

Hi

I'm currently looking to upgrade my JBL Creature ii, which I use with my computer, with something that has, well, better bass, better treble and more UMPH! I use these speakers for both listening to music (anything from Rock to Classical) and watching movies.

Initially I wondered about a Bluetooth/wireless system, but they all seem rather flawed, and I can't get anything decent within my price range (~£50-200). I read somewhere that PC speakers offer a bit of a false promise, and that I could use separate stereo speakers. But would I need a separate amp for this? I don't know much about the technicalities.

I may be completely wrong, but would it be possible to connect Apple Airport Express to such speakers, to make them wireless? I really would appreciate the ability to get some wires off my desk at last!

I'd really appreciate any advice! Currently a bit lost in the maze of different speakers...

Thanks :))

computer speakers for the most part are not so great sounding and regular speakers need amplification. Audio Engine is one company that tries to bridge the gap between quality sound and powered speakers however:

Do a google search with the speaker names and the word "review" and you'll see what I mean. You could start with a pair of the AE5's and eventually add a powered subwoofer and you'd have a pretty room filling system.

Or you could build a system over time that can grow with you. You could start with an entry level amp and add some bookshelf speakers from an Internet direct company like Energy speakers or SVS and save up for a sub woofer to make a 2.1 system:

Unfortunately I the shipping shipping to the UK won't be free so perhaps it might be better to go to a hi-fi shop or electronics store and look at the entry level options. Or there might be an internet direct company in the UK of which I am unaware.

An airport express will feed music wirelessly to either the powered speakers or the receiver.

Thanks so much! That was all very helpful.

You're right, I would like to grow my system over time - I don't have enough money (or space) to invest in the full monty right now. In my position, would you go for the AE5 (which does look v.good), or alternative (and probably cheaper) speakers plus a budget amp?

I love the look of these mordaunt-short speakers, and they sit within my price range - would they be any good for me?

Do you know if there are any affordable + decent alternatives to the Airport Express? Read the cnet review of the Logitech Squeezebox Duet and it looked great, except they had it priced at under £100, and the same thing is around £270 on Amazon UK!

Thanks again

Not too up on UK hi-fi manufacturers but

there is a strong tradition of top quality companies making hi-fi equipment over there (B&W, Rega, etc) and you have the benefit of the dollar not working against you when you go to buy (its all really expensive over here.

I'd keep digging on audiophile sites, looking at reviews etc to find out which companies might make a budget speaker to start out your system.
