5.1 Sound Output as Dolby Pro Logic II

by hmeleg - 11/14/09 12:03 PM

Running XP on a Jetway S755MAX motherboard that uses Realtek AC97 to deliver 5+1 separate output channels through the on board sound card. Now this would be fine if my LG surround sound system had 5+1 inputs but it doesn't. It only has Dolby Pro Logic II inputs which of course is just two encoded channels.

So if I change my motherboard sound choice to output on just two channels and then play back a recording that has 5+1 sound, will it output as Pro Logic II encoding so I can feed the two channels into my LG system and get 5+1 surround sound ?.

Is this a function of the player I use such as DVD-X-PLAYER or Real Player etc or do I need a special sound card to do this ?.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Depends

It depends on the player. Some will go with whatever the audio driver is set to, others will require you to set some kind of downmix option to collapse the audio into a stereo stream.

So, you're going to have to figure it out based on the player you're using. And if you ever want to get serious about your home theater experience, but are maybe on a bit of a budget, check out Onkyo's outlet store Club Onkyo. Sometimes you can find a good entry level home theater in a box (HTIAB) systems for a very reasonable price. They're either refurbs or discontinued models they're trying to clear out, but they're discounted quite nicely. I picked up a unit that retails for $800-$900 for about $500 shipped.

it will take any stereo (2 channel) and synthesize a surround mix from it so you'll be fine.
