Streaming HD content from a routers USB-NAS?

by runE Star - 11/9/09 6:32 PM

I am wondering if their are routers out their, specifically the 'Netgear WNDR3700' which have the option to attach an external USB drive to itself and then have the power to pump out streamed HD content, from that USB-Drive, over it's wireless? Without any hickups or anything...

Also a plus would be if it could do the above and also have somebody doing casual Internet Browsing through wireless as well.

I'm going with no.

Files are files. Streaming is just your hardware moving a file. Given the terse request with no details about what would be playing the content the answer must be no.

But there are numerous NAS or file servers that you can play a file on your laptop. But is that streaming?

Ok.

I'm thinking 1080p on an HDTV. Perhaps Boxee or XBMC to catch the signal from the router and display it on the tv (although I am a newb in regard to these systems).

That's just some file moving.

The play back is from the 360 to the HDTV. Here's a link for you to catch up.

Your replies are a bit hard to understand.
Such as streaming being just 'the hardware moving a file'. It is slightly more complicated than that. It also entails how fast what is being transferred, transfers. Not to mention that what is being transferred is only being transferred for the one time use of the current stream...

Anyway I found a link that provided the answer I needed.

I'm a programmer that writes assembler that runs on those boxes so when we stream a file, under neath it all is a file being moved from here to there.

There are products that will work for this. Once we get all your parts in place such as "I want to use a 360 and a HDTV" then we can find ready to use NAS things.

Don't let the techno sales people blind you and have you pay more for their brilliance or hype.
