Just replaced a hard drive, reloaded oem windows xp, downloaded drivers from dell website and installed in recommended order. Syem detects 3com ethernet adapter but does not detect cat5 cable when plugged in, just advises cable is unplugged. Did I miss something?
Check for the chipset drivers required for the computer and install it.
Try visiting the ethernet card manufacturer's website and see if there is an updated driver for the device.
Contact Dell and see if they have advice regarding the EXACT drivers to install.
And if the drivers don't fix it, then you may need to disable the current ethernet device and replace with an external ethernet card or such.. They occasionally die completely and an external ethernet is then required for replacement. Either that or a complete motherboard replacement.
Hope this helps.
