What could cause outlook, poker and utorrent to stop working

by sav1888 - 11/6/09 11:14 AM

outlook works for my hotmail account but cannot connect with the gmail server. I tried installing thunderbird and that had the same problem.

I use poker at bet365 which now loads to a white screen and tells me the casino.exe has encountered an error and needs to close.

utorrent opens fine but cannot download or upload.

Could it be a java issue (I've no idea what that is although I have since uninstalled it, reinstalled it and been told it's up to date and working fine on my computer) ? I think these 3 applications stopped working after I accepted a java update.

However, 2 other computers have the same problem so i've been told to set up a static ip address. I do not understand why I should suddenly need to so this when it was working fine for months. Should I do this? or could it be something else?

I use windows xp on 2 and vista on another and all 3 developed the same problem.

The common components between 3 computers ...

by Kees Bakker Moderator - 11/6/09 12:23 PM In reply to: What could cause outlook, poker and utorrent to stop working by sav1888

could be:
- your ISP
- your modem
- your router
- malware that spread itself through your home network

I'd start trying one of your PC's on a different location and another PC (you might know somebody with a laptop) with you. Just in case it's malware: turn off all your own computers when connecting that laptop and turn off all networked computers at that other location.

Thanks, I suspect my isp. Is it possible for them to block specific applications as I can use the internet no problem?

Excessive file sharing?

by MarkFlax Moderator - 11/7/09 5:49 AM In reply to: ok by sav1888

Some ISPs actively monitor P2P file sharing usage and cap either speed or downloads.

Not to mention the malware that can be distributed by infected files downloaded via P2P.

Bad ISP

If they do not provide stable and high bandwidth I do not give them more than 1$/month.

About the P2P

by R. Proffitt Moderator - 11/7/09 5:53 AM In reply to: ok by sav1888

After repeated calls to a P2P user the only way to stop that was to charge them for each trip. We would stop the P2P and reboot everything and it would work until they fired up P2P use. The theory is that either the ISP was shutting the connection down or the swarm of P2P use was killing there connection. It does not matter as the shutdown of P2P was the easy fix.

But just like a drug user they had a hard time kicking the habit. What seems to speed them along is to charge them for every service call.

Use a different protocol.

by Porch-a-Geese - 11/8/09 12:37 PM In reply to: What could cause outlook, poker and utorrent to stop working by sav1888

There are UDP transport clients, direct connect clients.
These also use different ports than bittorrent and allow traffic to pass back and forth.

If you read the original post ...

that's the first in this thread, you'll note it is about using a browser and a poker program also. Using UDP for those doesn't seem a good solution.

Utorrent is a file sharing program

by Porch-a-Geese - 11/8/09 7:37 PM In reply to: If you read the original post ... by Kees Bakker Moderator

The other option is direct connect.
FSP can be used for file transfer as can tftp.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_file_transfer_protocols#Primarily_used_with_UDP

Browsers are a different story, along with the poker application, and I feel no need to include or clarify them here.
