From the wording of your post I presume you paid for some sort of on-line service to convert the file, right? I am aware of a good AIFF to MP3 Converter for Windows http://www.softwaremastercenter.com/aiff-mp3-converter-for-windows_12960-7_software.html for about twenty dollars ... so if you purchase something like this at least you get to keep it and hopefully use to convert more files. Or for ten dollars more you could get a whole suite of converters called AVS Audio Tools http://www.softwaremastercenter.com/avs-audio-tools_14271-2_software.html. Of course, the question is - are you going to need to convert more files or not? If the answer is 'strong no', then it is not worth paying even one buck extra. BTW how did you get an AIFF file to begin with?
..a program will have to be REALLY good for me to pay for it. The last shareware product I paid for was a windows XP skinner (not stardock. I think it was called SkinXP) about 5 years ago.
To be perfectly honest, in this day and age, you can pretty much fine a free alternative to anything that works as well, if not better, than the paid products. ESPECIALLY when it comes to anti-virus.
