Hey, I need a cable setup for my PS3 on my Viewsonic VX2245WM Monitor.
I have 1 DVI input & 1 VGA input. I Have my Xbox 360 hooked up via VGA, Mac Mini via DVI. However for my PS3, I'm using a HDMI>DVI cable and running the audio through the PS3's component. I get the audio, but no picture, the screen stays black. I've tried holding down the ON button for 6 seconds (to hear the 2nd beep) and reset the video output settings; still no picture, all I get is a black screen.
Can anyone help me with the cables I have ? (I have purchased another HDMI>DVI cable with the same result) Or maybe give me another solution ?
Thanks, DecG
What you need is either a DVI splitter or a second monitor/TV.
Ermm, the thing is a monitor costs quite a bit, and the Splitter could be useful however it doesn't bother me to unplug the Mac which i do do.
When I unplug the Mac from the DVI imput, plug the PS3 in & Component to the speakers, I get Audio but no Video.
Any ideas?
Yeah, you need to pick one or the other, because I'll bet if you plugged in those component video cables, you'd get a picture.
So what you may want to do, is look for a set of VGA cables for the PS3. Because unless there's some setting in the XMB to have the video going over HDMI and audio over the composite audio cables on the component cables, it clearly seems that the HDMI connection is given a lower priority.
There are devices called Source Selectors if you wanted to put both the Xbox and PS3 on component cables. Then you can use the source selector to flip between devices.

I suppose that's the cable you're on about. So if i buy this, this solution stands a chance of working?
Thanks.
Sort of, though I would avoid cheap no-name cables. Doesn't mean you need to buy ridiculously overpriced Monster brand cables, but sometimes it makes a difference if they use cheap quality tin wires or a higher grade copper, maybe even gold plated copper.
And those multi-system cables like that, if you read the fine print, they'll tell you it will only work with one console at a time, and not to even have it plugged into any of the others. So seems a waste of 30 quid (does Amazon charge VAT?) for a cable like that.
I'd look for an individual VGA cable for the PS3, then get something like the 2-way VGA switch box like this, which you can buy with a VGA cable for about 11 quid. So assuming you can find a PS3 VGA cable for under about 20 quid, you save money and have a more flexible solution.
