Starting My First Ever website - a Blog

by sunnyvalesmostwanted - 11/4/09 4:30 PM

Hello,

I am starting my first ever website, it will be a blog site about sports. I am not fully sure how the site will look once complete but I plan on doing a daily entry about the previous day's sports action/happenings.

I am pretty sure that I am going to go with Wordpress for the software. I have never used it but it seems to be highly recommended.

Any tips/hints/suggestions that might be useful in my construction and running of this blog would be greatly appreciated. I'm new to the whole website creation thing so I would love to hear any/and all, suggestions.

Thanks

Michael

Tips

- Make sure you sign up for a legitimate and reliable host. There are many reviews on this forum and of course you can search for hosts by name in your search engine of choice to get more views.

- Picking an easy to remember, related, as short as possible domain name. Try to avoid hyphens, users tend to leave them out.

- Wordpress offers many plugins. Browse through their plugin list on Wordpress' Web site to see if there are any that would enhance your Web site. Don't add things that just look "cool," everything should have a purpose. Look at the top 10 plugins being downloaded, chances are there will be one or two plugins that may interest you, such as a spam filter and SEO optimization tools.

- There are many good and free Wordpress templates. I suggest you look at some of them, perhaps download a few, to get an idea of what's possible and how your Web site should look like.

- Write original content and include pictures. Users love pictures. If you present them with just a block of text, they may be too overwhelmed to read it unless your title is really good. If you include some visuals or even some media, your article will become more entertaining and interactive.

- You may want to also include one or two tracking systems to monitor how many visitors you get a month, where they come from, what computers they are using, etc so you eventually target your Web site more towards your audience.

But I want to run Ads........

by sunnyvalesmostwanted - 11/5/09 7:15 PM In reply to: Tips by Sovereign Moderator

After doing a little research. I see that there are TWO types of wordpress websites

wordpress.com
and
wordpress.org

wp.com gives you a blog and hosts it for free but you cannot run any external ads on it (which I want to be able to do)

and wordpress.org is the software for you to set up your blog on a diff hosting service. This will allow me to run ads but I do have a few concerns about doing it this way and I will post them using direct quoted from the wordpress website where it describes the diff between their two options:

On wp.COM "you cannot upload plug-ins"

on wp.ORG "requires more technical knowledge to set up and run"
on wp.ORG "you are esponsible for stopping your own spam"
on wp.ORG "you have to handle backups"
on wp.ORG "you must upgrade the software manually when a new version comes out"
on wp.ORG "if you mismanage your web server, you can lose your entire blog"

Now as a newb to this stuff, these are concerning to me.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
