Can anything other than IE open .jpgs or .gifs?

by zeebell - 11/4/09 1:49 PM

Windows XP w/SP3 IE 7
Compaq Presario SR1550NX
2.40 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64
Memory - 1.37GB of Ram
128 kilobyte primary memory cache
512 kilobyte secondary memory cache
200GB hard drive

All of a sudden I've lost the ability to open a .jpg or .gif file within my Outlook Express program. The icon has changed and when opening, a dialogue box appears asking what created the file. I click on IE and it opens fine.

There is a statement lower down in that dialogue box with a box UNCHECKED that says always use this program to open this file. I've been taught to not put a tik in that box; however, would it be safe to in this case and perhaps things would resume as they were before?

Thanks,

Julea

Julea, For Windows XP the default image viewer for jpg and gif fules is the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Go to the link below and download the small and free "imgeditor.zip" file, unzip it and run it to reset the default file associations.

Appreciate your help -- but

like Griff -- I rarely use the Windows Pictures and Fax Viewer. I did realize it was the default, but some time ago, I'd changed that like Griff describes below.

This time, when it slipped a cog for some reason, I'd just forgotten what I needed to do. Believe it's all clarified for me now though. I do appreciate your response.

Julea, A Suggestion..

Since opening such files within Outlook Express is NOT a good idea, try saving the files to your desktop and open them there.. On Windows XP, I generally use the "Windows Picture and FAX Viewer" mentioned by Tufenuf above.

To re-associate the picture file icon back to an opener of your choice, RIGHT click on the picture, choose "Open With", then select "Choose Program" from the menu. When the next Open With display opens, place a CHECK mark in the "Always use the selected program to open this type of file" box, then double click on the opener of your choice..

Hope this helps.

LOL Griff -- oh, I realize that about opening pics --

by zeebell - 11/4/09 6:49 PM In reply to: Julea, A Suggestion.. by Grif Thomas Moderator

these are pictures that I take off my hard drive and attach an email that I've composed. I'm just like to check them one last time before I send out to make sure I didn't goof in what I was sending them!

However, you have answered my question and refreshed my memory. For some reason, pc evidently slipped a cog and your method is what I should have remembered but didn't!

I appreciate your rescuing me from the depths of forgetfulness.

Nice to see you -- it's been awhile.
