USS New York sailing to commission

Yesterday she came to a standstill in front of the WTC, dipped her flag, and delivered a 21 gun salute.
There will be several opportunities for the general public to tour her.

I wish I could be there and chalk my message on some ammo before it gets loaded. It could stay in the ordnance dept. until its needed.

A news interview with the Captain of the 'boat'

Turns out his brother was in Tower 2 as a firefighter and was killed when it went down...The Captain shed tears when he found out he was going to have this command and felt it was terribly ironic that
1. 7-1/2 tons of steel from those towers were used to build the most important part of shipbuilding...the hulk
2. That the first of four ships using that steel is named the New York (the others are all named for the other three areas struck by the terrorists)
3. The ship built from steel that terrorists destroyed was built specifically for going after them and they will eventually have to come face to face with the continued strength of the USA which proves they didn't accomplish the mission they wanted which was to destroy our resolve and watch us crumble with the Towers.
It was a very moving interview...I think it's still on the FoxNews website because they were the ones that showed it. The were the only media invited to board and broadcast from the ship.

The first four ships in the series -- the USS San Antonio, USS New Orleans, USS Mesa Verde and USS Green Bay -- are in service. Four other ships in the class ate under construction: Somerset and Anchorage at the Avondale yard, and Arlington and San Diego at Northrop Grumman's yard in Pascagoula, Miss.
Arlington and Somerset also carry names connected to the Sept. 11 attacks: Arlington for the attack on the Pentagon and Somerset for the Pennsylvania county in which United Airlines Flight 93 crashed after being hijacked.
