It's not the same

by Jimmy Greystone - 10/24/09 4:22 PM In reply to: Best Free AV by paulnzkiwi

It's not the same, and basically your entire post is a red herring.

Free AV products are generally designed to try and upsell people. You get the basic product free, and the hope is that they can convert you into a paying customer. But you're getting effectively the same virus detection engine as the paying customers. In the case of AVG, you just don't get some of the more advanced scheduling options, and you're relegated to a lower priority (bandwidth wise) update server. To me, they seem like very equitable trade offs. I think Avira tends to harass people every so often with some kind of a popup, and Avast makes you register 2-3X/year for the free version. Still seems more than fair to me for people who may be on a budget.

And what about free after rebate solutions? According to your line of reasoning, those should be worthless to. Yet Fry's regularly has Kaspersky, McAfee, and Norton on free after rebate deals.

Malware is a whole other class of threat, that isn't a virus, worm, or trojan, so it really outside the realm of most AV programs. Faulting them for not picking up things that are beyond their scope of function is kind of like blaming a car for not being a spaceship.

Most of my problems come from hackers on my browser.
On nyt site, of all things.
I notice last week and this,
nyt has done away with 'replies'.
Even replies,
such as 'we got your message
and will respond'.

by donaldscurry - 10/29/09 11:23 AM In reply to: Best Free AV by paulnzkiwi

i dont where i got it from, but i got this nasty virus, spyware, trojan....whatever it is! and i tried several anti programs to get rid of it.....but its still there! i dont know what to do. everytime i begin to type anything it pops up with a search results window, flickering constantly. when i cancel this out, it drops a 1-line window down and and catch any letter that i type there. it will continue to catch letters there until i highlight it, hit backspace.....then i have to click the mouse cursor to where i was typing again and gain and again and.....well u get the idea! i tried avg, avast, spy doctor and spybot.....with no positive results except the programs will catch and delete other infections which i didnt think i had. i need some serious search & destroy......HELLLP!

Two things

by Jimmy Greystone - 10/29/09 12:25 PM In reply to: OK................I NEED MAJOR HELP!!! by donaldscurry

Two things:

1: It's rude to hijack someone else's thread for your problem

2: There's a virus and security forum which might be better suited to helping you

Then what

I believe you get what you pay for, and you do make good points, but you didn't mention any names. What do you use and does it do all the things you list?
