I have a 1 and a half year old Vaio with 32-bit Vista. I installed 32 bit Win 7 and discovered that i not longer can play Bluray Disks on it because the driver for the Nvidia GeForce 8400M GT is not compatible with Win7. I have installed "generic" Nvidia (but non-Sony sanctioned) drivers from several sites (using the modified .inf file)to no avail. I still cannot play BD movies. So "the one and only" source for an update to this driver is Sony and the say that they are no supporting this model (VGN-AR630E) for the Win7 transition.
How can Sony expect to continue being considered a premium brand with this horrible support and stupid policies?
I would have never expend all that $$$ had i knew that i have been left alone with a very expensive and unsupported product. But noy i know better.
DVD and Bluray play is not free. This means that play may require a license fee to be paid.
Let's keep this short. It may not be a choice that Sony or other makers have here since the license fees have to be paid and let's move forward to the next question.
Why blu ray player are you willing to pay for? If none then not much can be done since there is no free player yet.

While the larger point you're trying to make is certainly valid, Sony is the company behind bluray, so there's no real issue with licensing here.
Still, it should be noted for everyone, that the larger point you were trying to make is valid.
I'll also add to the original poster, that you may want to try players like VLC Player. If there's a free media player out there with any hope of playing bluray movies, it would be VLC Player.
Someone will write a piece explaining www.mpegla.com, licensing, and more and explain how VLC PLAYER got around the mpegla trap.
There is no getting around this trap for blu ray today.

The problem is not with the BD licensing, but with the driver for the Nvidia card. The error i get when trying to play a BD movie is that the current driver is not compatible.
And just as a clarification, my laptop came with a BD drive and BD software already included (WinDVD with BD for VAIO). So I'm not trying to get anything for free. I'm just trying to get the functionality that i have paid for.
I did a google search and other are having issues with Sony and that card.
It is refreshing (kind of) to see that someone is having the exact same problem as me. I bought a VGN-AR750E Sony Vaio Notebook about 1.5 yrs ago. It came with Vista Home Prem and this past weekend I upgraded to W7 Ultimate. So far, my Cds, DVDs and Blu Rays will not play as the Matishuti something or other driver won't work and my NVIDIA 8600 card isn't working properly as they won't update the drivers. Their tech support is awful. I am trying to get to the bottom of this. Everyone needs to make sure to tell Microsoft about this as they are losing money also as Sony is not upgrading drivers for thousands of people who want to upgrade to W7... Keep in touch and let's get this sorted out.
Try http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ and the hacked drivers there.
i have already downloaded the driver from this and other sites, replaced the ".ing" file with the modified one and still get the "the driver is not compatible" notification when trying to play BD's.
I'm convinced now, that the only source for the driver is Sony themselves. But they have declared (on their support site) that they are not supporting my model for the Win7 transition.
This is the sad truth of my situation (and of thousands more, too)
Just this afternoon I chatted with tech support (for the 4th time in two days) and Marcus the chat analyst did say to begin to periodically start checking back at the Sony support site for updated drivers. He said they were in the process of testing the different Sony models out with W7 and making notes of what problems were occurring. I felt some relief that at least they know of the issue and they seem to be taking action. He offered no timeframe, but just said to periodically check back. The best thing to do is keep hounding them. Chat with them, call them email them, etc. and KEEP DOING IT. You paid good money for that PC and W7 is great. Detail out exactly what isn't working, your model number and what drivers you think needed updating and that will assist them in the process of releasing these drivers faster. Just keep bugging them, I know they hate me already. ![]()
I looked at that model and didn't see any indication it was ready for Windows 7. Who told you to change the OS?
