beep code

by nonvista - 11/3/09 5:03 PM

My question is simple: when I try to boot I get a continuous 6 second
long beep. The PC is a gateway (refurbrished) piece which I bought
online abt 6 mos ago. I have no documentation. It's an Intel piece
w/dual core 2.4 processer, 4 gigs of Ram. I used it off&on 4 abt 5 mos
WINVISTA home prem 32bit version. The only thing i did was install
an old version of PHOTOSUITE v 4.?, which worked fine.
Gateway won;t give me the time of day.
Beep codes used to be an open subject. Anybody got any advice?
Thanks

Power off, remove the AC cord, open it up and GENTLY push the video card home. Try again.

non boot

I thank U 4ur reply. The thought never occured to me. I've build abt 9
PC's since 2000 and yes I have removed/reseated the graphic card at
least half a dozen times to get a successful reboot (BASED ON THE BEEP
CODE)(WIN98.2)
Here there is no video card, on board graphics. I've never had the
cover off (I don't want to look). It's a cheap piece. I only bought it
to familiarze myself w/WINvista.
I shudda got into LINUX 6 years ago.
Many thanks for your interest.

Ask Gateway

Ask Gateway what that particular code means for that system model. There's no uniform system for what these codes mean, so you have to figure it out on a system by system basis.

Jimmy, tks 4ur reply. That's the 1st thing I did, contact GATEWAY.
In signing in I had to enter the model number, serial number. At least 2 digits in each field were mutilated. i.e. like alpha num-
erical symbols (illegible). and was therefore unsuccesful.
(Did I mention that this was a refurb? And when one purchases a re-
furb w/o documents you are on your own.
BUT...TKS for reminding me. Maybe I'll visit their site and get a
phone number, get lucky and speak to a HUMAN BEING.

Or send 'em an email

by Jimmy Greystone - 11/3/09 8:29 PM In reply to: VISTAnonboot by nonvista

Or send 'em an email. Try something like support@gateway.com or similar. Just tell them the model, that you're getting 6 long beeps, and you're trying to figure out what error that represents. Give it a day or two, and they will probably respond with about a 2 page email, 99.99% of which will be pointless boilerplate fluff you don't care about. But buried somewhere in there will likely be the answer you're looking for.
