Is it possible to do the above? And is it advisable, in other words, does it work well? I recall looking into this a couple of years ago when yet another fax machine stopped functioning, but came away with the idea it didn't work well....still true?
When it works, it's fine. Many have forgotten that a phone line is needed and ask how to fax over the internet. That's ok as we have efax.com

Thanks for the info. You're happy with efax then?
There are a few competitors today. Ringcentral is under 7 bucks a month for 300 sheets. I fax so rarely that I just use a fax machine.

We use the standard FAX machine on a telephone line as well.
Hope this helps.

Hi Grif. The whole idea is to get away from using a "conventional" fax machine, eliminating the cost to pay for this line every month.
I have done the same thing with my office phone line, now using ooma, it's works with no problem, and no more phone bills.
PS I am on hold with Ring Central as we speak, trying to sort out why Ring Central, specifically the Call Controller, will NOT WORK.
Even in our remote offices where we've only got one employee, we set up the FAX machine on the single telephone line coming in to the office. We still need the T line. The single line works fine for both standard telephone calls and FAXing.. Plus we find it cheaper than eFAX services because we still have to pay for the line to be there.....
Hope this helps.

A Fax utility comes with Windows XP, but you may have to install it from Add/Remove progrsms/Windows Components....You need a phone line and a data/fax modem.... Before using, you have to configure the fax, i.e. fax numbeers, sender name, which modem to use, mnual receive or auto receice(no. of rings).....etc.
