Digital cameras: want good canon digital camera for sports pic taking

Usually you will need a camera that has 5+ fps to have a better chance to capture the peak moment, especially if the action is fast and somewhat unpredictable. The entry level 3 fps is a little slow for sports action.

If you shoot outdoor daytime well-lit sports, then any tele lens will be okay. If you want something high quality and good value, consider the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L.

If you shoot indoor or night sports, then you will need a fast tele lens with f/2.8 or larger aperture. And I will highly recommend the IS version. You will also need a camera with good high ISO performance. I have even used ISO 3200 with my lens wide open at f/2.8, just to barely get enough speed to stop the night soccer action of my son playing in a local park. The IS certainly helps to minimize blurring at 200mm end. Night time sports action can be frustrating if you don't have the right equipment. The Canon 50D or 7D with EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS will be good to have, but may make a dent in the bank account. Canon just started their fall rebates that will run until 1/16/2010 I believe, so make sure you check them out. Nikon has great selections too, but I know Canon much better.
