how to upscale video using a Pioneer VSX-1019AH A/V receiver

by billallen-ba - 10/31/09 9:33 PM

I have attempted to upscale video to 1080P from a Motorola DCH6200 cable box using the above A/V unit to a Panasonic V10 series plasma TV with no success. I purchased this receiver based upon CNET's review that this unit would do this. I had the cable box connected to the A/V unit via HDMI and the A/V unit to the TV via HDMI. The manual for the VSX-1019AH is horrible. There is some information on page 67 concerning this process but it is useless. Their procedure, if one can call it a procedure, is not recognized by the unit. The source video remains the same resolution and will not upscale to 1080P.

Help,

Output settings on Comcast/Moto box?

by Pepe7 - 10/31/09 10:49 PM In reply to: how to upscale video using a Pioneer VSX-1019AH A/V receiver by billallen-ba

That's the only thing I can think of. Have you run through the 480i/480p settings, etc.? I'd post over at AVS forums to get the skinny on what you should expect. That HDTV model is fairly new, so the folks there should be well versed. AFAIK there is at least one dedicated thread on the V10 in their plasma sub-forum.

Also, what sort of upscaling quality did you see when you viewed SD material when it was connected directly to the V10? (Cutting out the middle man, mind you.)

If you do find a solution, would you mind posting back the answer here for folks looking in the future?

I may have figured it out

It looks like you cannot do it via HDMI. (You were right- Wow, that Pio manual is truly crappy!) IOW, the output from the Comcast box must be analog via the component cables to upconvert via HDMI from the Pio to the V10 AFAIK. HDMI to HDMI is only pass through if what they say below is true. I found a reference here-

http://www.hometheatermag.com/receivers/pioneer_vsx-1019ah_av_receiver/index5.html

Given the generally crappy SD feeds of many cable providers, you might actually be better off viewing it as is (garbage in, garbage out principle), or at least consider comparing with connecting the comcast box video output directly to the V10. Since the Moto boxes do not output TrueHD or any other wide band audio, you can still use a digital optical cable to get the surround signal to your Pio receiver.

Previous setup did not work

I believe your conclusion is correct – thanks for the input. I originally connected the cable box directly to the Panasonic via HDMI and audio to the Pio via a digital optical cable as you suggested. Then I ran the setup stated in my original post, which did not work and I have since reconnected directly to the Pana.

We sit about 8 feet from the 54” screen. The 1080i feeds are very good; the 480i are acceptable for viewing regular TV, but not great. Bluray is outstanding! I did not have any up scaling. Is this because I’m using only HDMI cables and not component cables?

I’m still learning what my equipment can do.

Double check @ AVS

I haven't had a chance to look enough into the features/settings/connections of the V10 yet to know for certain. I have a gut feeling you might have better luck regardless by sticking to a direct output of SD content from the Moto box to the V10. FWIW, my friends who upgraded to the G10 are generally pleased with its performance (also bypassing receivers), but not so much with their Comcast SD channels.

No dice

I check the Pioneer official site. Others are having the same problem I'm having and they reached the same conclusion. It must be an analog 480i or 480p signal using component connections. And, the manual is a "piece of crap". One of the posters called tech support and they verified the scaling issue.

I wish cnet review had been more clear on this before I purchased the unit.

I will add component cables and see if the upscaling is any better than the source signal picture. However, the Pioneer forum stated that it would not be as good. You had already suspected this.

On an other issue, one of the posters is having a similar problem I have with my Harmony One remote. Equipment turns on when it should stay off and the 1019 will setup to the previous issue command instead of the most recent issued command.

Why upscale cable box?

by Dan Filice - 11/1/09 8:05 PM In reply to: No dice by billallen-ba

1080i from cable or satellite looks good, and upscaling it to 1080p won't gain you anything. If you are expecting Blu-Ray 1080p quality, forget it, it won't happen. Enjoy 1080i, and connect a BR player for 1080p.

SD to 1080p

by Dan Filice - 11/2/09 12:42 PM In reply to: I believe he's... by Pepe7

Can't the SD source be fed to the TV and let the TV do the upscale? I know it would defeat his receiver, but it might get him what he wants.
