...with that clunky add on memory that was (physically) huge compared to the Timex Sinclair 1000. It was something like 3"x2"x2" as I recall.
I paid $133 for an 8k cartridge for my Commodore Vic 20! That brought my memory up a roaring 11k. Oh yeah ... my cassette tape drive was the bomb after that!
I have found that 4 gigs of ram on windows 7 64 bit runs better then 3 but have to remember I am a gamer there are alot of games that want 1-2 gigs of ram for themselves win 7 uses 640mb at an idle. I also found the windows 7 32 bit runs just fine with 2 gigs of ram. What IC from trying to keep the comp in its fastest running is try to keep it below 50% useage when you go over that will start running a little slower alot has to do with your cpu too the faster the cpu the more ram can be used same with video card. This system here is a 3.20 gig dual core has 2 gigs of ocz 1000mhz ram gtx 260 video card that has 1 gig of ram on it runs dual boot windows 7 32 bit and win xp pro. Just so you know I have not found a game it will quiver on. Now kids pc has 4 gigs with win vista needs that to get the same performace since windows vista is a huge ram hog even after shutting off most of the unnessassary programs.
Remember when Bill Gates announced that 64k would be all anyone would ever need.
Bill Gates never said that! Its like the famous phrase from Star Trek TOS: "Beem me up schotty", also never said.....
Holly cow - $100 is half of your rent - lucky you.
Fran
he was talking about a situation that was at least 15 years ago, if not more.
Keyword here is WAS. I wish I was still paying $167/month rent, but I'm glad I'm getting more than $2.00/hr in pay!
I remember saving up for a whole year just to buy a few bytes!!! sorry, I couldn't resist joining in the one-upsmanship : )
What was that on?
I remember adding a 1K memory pack to my TI 1000 and thought that was hot stuff!

Our first home machine was maxed out with 640k and a 10M hard drive. And, at that point I had been working with computers at school that required punch cards, though one of my best friends had gotten a TRS-40 back in middle school. We used a TV for the monitor and I think it had a total 640k whatever they had... LOL.
Ahh the early days. "no computer will ever need more than 640k of ram" Bill Gates said that before he released windoze. And the Microsoft Garbage collection has always been horrible. when I had a 32k PET The thing would every so often go into garbage collection and finish hours later (really. normally only a few seconds but there were times when it would seem to never want to return. It is my feeling that the more ram you have the less often the garbage collection is needed. my windoze machine has kept getting slower and slower ever since I got it, and now (with NO software changes) it takes 5 times longer to start or shutdown than when I got it. So yesterday I upgraded to 2 gigs from 512k and suddenly it is like new again.
Oh yes my mitts 680B cost me $895 to upgrade to 8 k from 512bytes in 1974.
Don
Dell is still doing that, selling systems with virtually no ram, barely enough to boot up...
