PC XP home OS startup

when i startup the PC the HD seeks are so excessive i cannot really use the pc for aboout ten minutes. started a few months ago and getting prgressively worse. any ideas? i think something is hogging ram at startup. i also expreience similar HD seeks when opening IE and searching web.

norton symantec and malwarebytes....never flag anything more than a random cookie here are there.
