Receiving weird emails

by Big Steve - 10/28/09 3:05 AM

I posted this in the "E-mail, chat and VoIP" forum last night, got no hits so I decided to post it here.

I have several email accounts, my primary email account and other accounts with Yahoo, Google and Hotmail for my junk mail and lately I've been receiving a lot of junk mail in my Yahoo mail. They're SPAM for sure, they start out like "Big Steve, have you seen my little dog? "Big Steve, why don't you answer your phone"? "Big Steve, did you get my letter"? "Big Steve I had fun last night".

I immediately delete them all but who's sending out this crap? Is it a person sitting in front of a computer terminal being paid to send this stuff out or is it a robot doing it? If I did click on a link in any of these emails which I don't because of possible security threats to my PC, is that why I'm receiving these emails? Some days into my Yahoo account I might receive at least 20 of these a day.

Glad you delete those, Steve

There's a lot now and you need to make sure that Yahoo is blocking spam. Or you will view the inbox via Yahoo online service then click on "Spam" so Yahoo will remember such email is spam.

I am too. If I had known not to automatically delete them and clicked on the links in each email instead what would the threat have been? Possible spyware, trojan, etc.?

Depending on the Spam, Steve

Some spam will confirm your e-mail address so they get paid for sending spam to active email account while others will send more spam to your address since it's 'active' account.

Some spam has malware (trojan) so don't click on any links or even reply. Also it's best to use non-HTML view of the email so all scripts in the message is disabled.

You lost me when you said "non-HTML" view but I feel confident that you'll let me know what you meant. Thanks for the post.

Sorry for the confusion, Steve

Go to Yahoo! mail options, select 'spam' at the left pane. Enable SpamGuard automatic contol then choose option on how you want it to handle images in messages. This will block images or scripts in any images.

If you are retrieving your Yahoo mail in email program, use plain-text view in email program so no HTML.
