All Non-Default Apps Stopped Working

by harchh - 10/26/09 11:45 AM

On Sunday morning, 22 Oct 09, every one of the apps that I'd downloaded, free or paid, stopped working. Defaults apps continued to work. Power cycling the phone didn't help. But once I sync'd the phone the problem went away.

By some strange chance, only the day before I'd read that there was an 80% theft rate for iPhone games. So I am suspicious that the problem was that Apple sent me something to force a sync to re-validate all of my apps.

Did anyone else see this recently?

Purchased app issue

Actually, I have never seen this. I get lazy and dont sync mine for weeks at a time, which is a no-no. Could you elaborate on what you mean by power cycling? Do you mean turning it off and then back on or resetting? Turning it off and back on is actually power cycling and rarely works with an Iphone the way it works with normal cell phones. That is how normal phones are reset. But the Iphone is actually reset in a different manner by holding the power button and the home button until the apple appears.

As far as a forced sync, I dont think that was the issue, I think that it needed to be reset. Syncing can accomplish a reset, or when you are not with your computer you can reset the way I mentioned above. Syncing basiclly refreshes the information in your purchased apps, the same way a manual reset would. If that were to happen again, try the manual reset and see if that helps. If you meant reset by power cycling, I guess I am not really sure why it would do that. Mine did that one time when I let it completely die, but when I charged it via the wall port, it came back on and all of my purchased apps were wiped clean, only default were still there. When I sync'd it, everything was restored.

In answer to your question...

When I said power cycled, I mean that I held the top button and the home button until the red "Slide to power off" thing appeared, at which point I slide it and the thing powered off. When I press and hold the top button in the powered off state, then the apple appears and it IPLs (to use the olden days term).

And, come to think of it, on Saturday night my iPhone did run out of power and turn off. But I was able to play a paid app game after I got it hooked to the wall charger, the apple appeared, and it IPL'd (aka booted).

No need to hold both those buttons down

to shut the device down.

The top one, by itself, will suffice.

The two buttons at once thing is a method of resetting in case of problems. ie. it won't turn off normally

Proper reset

When you need to reset, the only way to actually reset or refresh is to hold both buttons down until the apple comes up, and not "slide to power off". When you slide, it actually only turns the phone off, then when you push down the top button, it turns back on, and the apple displays while it is starting up. This is only the power on screen and does not refresh anything.

When you are having problems the only way to reset is holding both buttons until the apple comes up, you know the difference because the apple will stay there for around two minutes while refreshing, when it is the power on screen it is usually only there less than a minute.
