New camera!!

by deeppzz - 10/24/09 10:55 AM

I've bought a new camera Nikon Coolpix L100.
How do i capture the moon at its closest?
Also i tried capturing in the auto mode. But it was unable to focus.
It got focused 2-3 times.

Also how do i capture the farthest objects very clearly using the full zoom?

might not be the focusing

Are you using a tripod when shooting the moon? If not then I bet the problem is with too low of a shutter speed to be held. At full zoom you are at 420mm, that means that you would want a speed of at least 1/420th sec. Now image stabilization helps and you might be able to get a 1/100th sec when using image stabilization.

Will i be able to capture in a good detail of the moon using a tripod? If yes which is the scene mode i should opt for?

I could see some of them taking shots of the moon such a way that the craters were visible.

possible answers

You can upconvert, but it's not as good as native HD. Here's a link that talks about it and different options.

http://www.sharbor.com/tutorials/1624.html

The question of photos in HD is simple...photos are much higher in resolution than any HD signal. An HD screen is about the the equivalent to a 1 megapixel photo. So, if you convert a photo to HD then you are dropping the resolution substantially.

Reseting file numbers!!

by deeppzz - 11/4/09 7:43 AM In reply to: possible answers by kalel33

How do i reset the file numbers in Nikon Coolpix L100? I could find the reset option in the menu settings. But it could help me out only in resetting to the default values!!
Also could you send me the link for the software to convert the videos from avi to HD?
thank you :)

sd to hd

There are a number of software products that can change SD to HD. You can't change AVI to HD because AVI is a container format that has nothing to do with resolution. You can have AVI videos that are HD and SD. Here is a list from Cnet's download area.

Clarity

by deeppzz - 11/4/09 9:30 PM In reply to: sd to hd by kalel33

Will the clarity get increased if i convert from avi to HD? At least better than avi normal video?

Post 11 of 17

Very little

by kalel33 - 11/5/09 8:06 AM In reply to: Clarity by deeppzz

You're not adding any new information so the image will be more like SD quality than HD quality. It's the same as upconverting DVD players, they give the image a tweak but it's nowhere near true HD. But you're not converting from AVI to HD, you'd be converting AVI-SD to AVI-HD.

Result!!

by deeppzz - 11/5/09 9:39 AM In reply to: Very little by kalel33

So there will be no changes in the clarity from avi-sd to avi-hd even though i convert them.
Actually i love to see the videos in HD. But this camera doesn't support HD recording.
Any other alternatives?

upconvert to HD

by hjfok - 11/5/09 10:21 AM In reply to: Result!! by deeppzz

Burn your SD video on DVD, then play it in a DVD player that upconvert to HD, and enjoy it on your HDTV. Upconverting DVD players are very common and cheap these days.

I guess I can't explain it well enough

by kalel33 - 11/5/09 10:25 AM In reply to: Result!! by deeppzz

It'll give it a little bit better look, but it won't look as good as if you shot a video in HD. When you shoot non-HD and then upconvert to HD it won't be the same. There's not as much detail being captured in the non-HD as the HD, so it will just guess. Some software do it better than others. There was one software that I found by searching called Red Giant that people liked, but it costs $99.

The other thing you have to think about is that not all HD recorded videos look the same. It depends on the compression, format, and sensor of the camera. For example, a 12MP point and shoot does not have the same quality of a 12MP DSLR.

HD quality

by hjfok - 11/5/09 10:59 AM In reply to: Result!! by deeppzz

Agree with above. You have to have realistic expectations. PS compacts generally have low SD quality video. A SD camcorder will do a much better job than a PS compact. You really cannot expect to upconvert these low quality PS compact SD video clips and transform them into blueray cinematic true HD quality video (you will need a HD camcorder for high quality HD video). Using software or DVD upconversion will make watching these SD video clips on HDTV more tolerable, because otherwise they just look horrible.
