Browsers: Can't open a downloaded Office file from IE8

Can't open a downloaded Office file from IE8

As a teacher, I have a website filled with uploaded powerpoints, spreadsheets and documents. I have all these hyperlinked in the site. When I use IE8 and try to open them, a dialog box opens telling me to use the internet to find software to open them. It is stated in the box that they are Office files.

I can save the files, the other option, but opening is not given. Firefox opens the files as usual, allowing me to select the appropriate application.

I want IE back- I like the FTP use with the websites,

Any help?
