I too did a simple upgrade(read non clean install) from vista home prem to 7 ultimate with no problems. Haven't had any issues yet and it has been running two weeks (our university got 7 early)
I'm running Vista Home Premium and want to move to Windows 7 Professional. I realize that requires a custom install rather than the easier upgrade install, but can I do the custom install with the less expensive upgrade license? In other words, if I buy an upgrade license for Windows 7 Professional, will it fail because my previous OS was Vista Home Premium, not Professional?
I'm replying to myself for the benefit of others who might have the same question. I went ahead and bought a Windows 7 Professional Upgrade license, and in the installation, it did allow me to choose whether to proceed with an "upgrade" installation or a "custom" installation.
In other words, choosing "custom" did allow me to install Professional, even though I had bought an upgrade license based on Vista Home Premium.
The installation was easy, and there were no problems. All told, it took about four hours, including my copying all my photos, music, and documents to an external HD before I even started the upgrade process. It turned out that was an unnecessary step (glad I did it anyway) since custom installation moved all those files to a "windows.old" folder.
Find your self a copy of Win 7 home premium (full) install and use anytime upgrade to upgrade. I just did it and it works.
install the windows 7 home premium upgrade and then use anytime upgrade to go to pro
Just to make it clear to everyone, an Upgrade leaves your files the way they were and a Clean Install DOES NOT!! IIRC, Upgrades only work with the same versions, ie. Vista Home Premium 32 bit to Win 7 Home Premium 32 bit. Also, if you have a dual-boot system and want to keep it, you are stuck with doing a clean install as the Upgrade will not add the "Older Version of Windows" to the boot.ini.
I've done two win 7 installs on dual boot systems (1 desktop - HP 64 bit & 1 lappy - HP 32 bit). Had to choose "Custom" from the install screen and specify the partition where I wanted it installed. Reloaded all my drivers and applications and all is good. XP still is listed at bootup and loads fine.
I am wondering if anyone else found that the initial Windows 7 Upgrade Advisory showed that you could upgrade from Vista Home Premium to either Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Professional. I preordered in June the 7 Professional based on this information just to find out that I have to have a clean install.
You might have seen a draft?
The current ones say it's a clean install:

If you have a hard-copy of the old advice and it's a reason to not upgrade, try to get your money back. Else bite the bullet.

That would be nice but Microsoft obviously saw their mistake and the next time, after about two weeks, the advisory would not work and I had to install another advisory that showed upgrading from Vista Home Premium to 7 Premium or 7 Ultimate. When I tried to install from an older site I got two statements one asking if I wanted to close and the other if I wanted to repair the advisory. I clicked repair and got the Home Premium and Ultimate again. I guess Microsoft is not about to say that they initially made a mistake.
Try this, it worked for me...

I made the same mistake in ordering the pre-release version of Win 7 to Professional from Vista Home Premium upgrade. Now I find the same problem and I was told by MS support when I called upon discovering that the upgrade wouldn't install, but requires a "clean" install, that I would not be able to register my new operating system and that it would quit operating in 30 days. Couldn't excange my new Win 7 Professional with vendor either, although I offered to pay difference in pre-release prices. Boo Microsoft for this confusing and unfair business practice in offering upgrades! Package sits opened, but unused.
