I am running windows XP pro on a Dell Optiplex GX270. I have the purchased copy of AVG.
Periodically new internet connections won't get connect to the home page (which is google for me) or any other url. The new internet window opens, but never gets to the url requested.
I run AVG with the web shield disabled because of all the interference I got with it turned on. The only thing I can do is reboot the computer (yes, it shuts down properly and reboots properly). I've checked with the Microsoft Process Explorer tool and don't see any reason for this hangup to occur.
I didn't have this problem before I installed AVG. I've contacted AVG but I really don't have time to jump through the hoops their technicians ask you to do to resolve the problem.
This is rather unusual situation. I'd recommend to get in touch with our specialized support staff (link to the support page below), who can try to investigate further.
Before that, try checking if you don't run additional security software (being it another firewall, another Anti-malware system, etc.). That could possibly be the cause of this as well.
As a paying customer, the support assistance is free of charge (except for premium support).

I have a Dell Optiplex GX520 and have the free version of AVG 8.5.421
and I have the same issue. Also the time it takes me to log in to my email account varies from "almost none" to 30 seconds to "unable to connect". A reboot of the computer always works.
A pain but not bad enough to uninstall.
I constantly suffer from IE 8.0 tabs which are unable to open. Sometimes I must open four tabs to the same URL before I get one that works. My system is a Vista Ultimate 64-bit using a 3.0 ghtz AMD CPU with 8GB of memory on a 1TB harddrive. However, two other computers using Windows XP Pro 32-bit systems, also, have this problem.
I believe it is conflict with both AVG 8.5 and my Google Toolbar. If I uninstall either AVG or the Google toolbar, the problem seems to disappear for a while, but then reappears. If I completely remove both AVG and the Google toolbar, the problem completely disappears.
I really like both AVG and my Google toolbar, so for now I am stuck with these hanging tabs. Note: I clean the IE temp folder on a daily basis.
Hi,
have you checked the AVG installation in custom mode without AVG LinkScanner component (AVG Toolbar is not installed either)?
Are you using other protection applications (SpyBot, Spyware Terminator, ...)?
What version of AVG are you using (program version, paid/free)?
Thanks
I believe the problem lies with the link scanner. I was having problems with some web pages loading very slowly, having to reload a page several times to get it to populate or not at all. I unchecked all three settings boxes in the link scanner component of the GUI and disabled the two addons which AVG installed in my Firefox browser, the AVG Safe Search and the AVG Security Toolbar. That seemed to fix the problem. I was using Avira Antivir Personal and I'm seriously thinking about going back to that app since I never had any problems with it.
