I just purchased the Canon Vixia HF 200. I also purchased a 32GB Transcend SDHC Class 6 memory card to go with it. When I put the card in, a message on the screen says, "Cannot record movies on this memory card. Initialize only using the camcorder." Why is this? What is the problem?
The new card needs to be initialized in the camcorder. When you do that, several things happen - including the camcorder's "operating system" sets up a database file that keeps track of the various video and still image files that your new camcorder captures and folders/subdirectories in which it stores the data you capture.
Refer to the camcorder's manual
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=177&modelid=17994#DownloadDetailAct
See page 43.
Since the Transcend SDHC Class 6 memory card you got is new, there is nothing on it - initialize the card in the camcorder.
Thanks for the reply.
I had my HF200 in Dual Shot Mode. It will not initialize in Dual Shot Mode.
Thanks again.
I followed the initialization instructions. It completes just fine, but when I try to record something, it says, "Only initialize memory card with camcorder". I don't get it. I tried several times. Each time it says that initialization was OK. I have a Transcend 32GB Class 6 card that was from eBay and supposed to be brand new. Does anyone have any suggestions? Could the card be faulty? Thanks in advance for any help.
The camera doesn't work with the transcend cards. I don't know why. The data is actually recorded onto the card but you cannot play the video back on the camera (after you've turned it off once), nor transfer it to your computer. If you have a separate card reader you can transfer the files to your computer (they are on the card but not recognized by the camera). Photos are handled just fine. Initializing doesn't solve the problem. I ended up paying a few more bucks for a lexar 32gb sdhc class 4 card and it works wonderfully. Just something about the transcend card, I guess.
I have already returned the Transcend card for a refund, and purchased another that works fine...thanks.
If you don't mind my asking, what card did you purchase that works fine?
Thanks.
I purchased an A-Data 32GB SDHC Class 6 card on Amazon.com for #59.99 and free shipping. Works fine.
Hey thanks a lot for sharing that SDHC card info. I'm about to order a similar one as well for my Canon Vixia HF20, which I bought just today...I was wondering if you could help me out some other questions.. Once I transfer videos to the SDHC card do I need any special software to upload onto my Vista Professional laptop? And if I can how easy is it to edit the video? Please let me know as I'm flying oversees middle of next week and am scared I'd end up not knowing how to use the camcorder...Also what kind of spare battery would you suggest?
I'll be honest, I am not the one to ask about transferring and/or editing video, as I really don't have much experience. Hopefully, someone else on the forum will answer that.
I have purchased additional batteries for my Canon Vixia HF200. I went with the extended-time replacement for the BP-819. You can get them fairly cheap at Amazon.com or on eBay. The original Canon batteries are too expensive in my opinion. The only downside is that the non-Canon batteries do not have the proprietary software within that enables the camera to tell you how much recording time is left - no major deal if you have a spare.
Hope I helped somewhat.
Thanks that tip about the battery definitely helped. After reading about the ADATA Class 6 SDHC card I did some research and found some conflicting opinion on AMAZON. Wanted to know if you had any issues with it?
Not yet. I will post if I do.
on such an expensive camera id recommend against using a non-canon battery
What could be the consequence?
