have 3 3.5 hard drives that have os problems and won't boot up. I would like to get pictures and some files from them. Purchased usb 2.o to ide connector but can't make it work. It works on 2.5 notebook drive.Tried it using notebook running vista and one using xp didn't work on either. If someone could walk me through this I would be greatful.also note that when I connected laptop hard drive it showed all files on drive but I did not know how to get files/picture etc from old drive to laptop it was connected to. Thanks for any help you might provide
That's as easy as chewing gum & walking at the same time.
One thing about your problem accessing the drive from your desktop machine.
Did you use a power usb transfer cable?
The one with a power supply?
It will make it move the files faster.
You can access the drive by going to my computer icon on desktop for both drives & double click on both so you have both drives open on desktop & go to your pics & docs you have saved & merely copy & paste or drag & drop them onto the laptop c: drive or which ever drive letter your laptop drive is.
Warning: Do not move the files by selecting move files.
If you want to format the desktop drive you can go to disk management & go to the drive & select format & do it that way to wipe the drive.
You will lose everything on the drive.
It's a little differant if you want to save any email files.
You can't move email files the same way.
You can use software to tranfer email folders & settings.
You can also use utility software to see whats up with your drive you say is not working correctly.
1. Assuming it are IDE-drives (not SATA-drives) they should work, unless (as suggested by the above poster) it's a power problem. 3.5" drives need external power, not only USB-power. So then buy another connector or enclosure and get it done.
2. Moving files across drives is just the same as moving files between folders on the same drive. If you can do that, you can do it now also. If you don't know how to move files on the same disk, it's time to start learning the basics about your OS.
