I hesitate to upgrade from Vista. For years, I upgraded whenever a new OS came out. Sometimes I'd install the upgrade, sometimes some IT friend would. No matter how well I prepared ahead of time, several software programs stopped working, several files became inaccessible, peripherals wouldn't be recognized, enough would go wrong that it was better to roll back to the previous OS. My last PC and laptop had XP pre-installed, and I stuck with XP until they failed. Now I've got two laptops running Vista. There are things I don't like about it, but I can say the same about every OS I've used. Most importantly, both laptops work beautifully. I rarely, if ever, have problems with them (knock on wood, they're THE best computers I've ever used, at home or work), I see no reason to fix what ain't broken, so I'll stick with Vista. When it's time to replace one or both laptops, I'll just go with whatever OS is current at that time.
Vista runs well for me with few glitches. I probably won't change until I get a new computer.
I have been through every build of windows and quite bluntly I am fed up with upgrade after upgrade being a complete farce. Not only that Windows 7 doesn't even have an E-Mail program like windows Mail and outlook Express. When I purchase software online I get a receipt and I don't like just having that receipt available just online. When you receive a license key etc. you like to have that stored in a safe place for reinstallation.
Storing E-Mail online maybe part of government legislation but it is not mine. It is E-Personal mail that concerns me. and soon there be so little storage space available MS and other companies will begin to charge for it.
As far as Windows goes I am so fed up with it I only use it because I have my photographic editting software installed on it. If I could get all my applications to work without Vista, I would. I am so cheesed off with the company now it makes no difference.
As a computer tech it's important for me to stay proficient in all of the available operating systems. We're all human and resistant to change, especially once we've grown comfortable with something. It took me 7 years to get my Mom to upgrade from Windows 95 to XP!!!
If you're familiar with Vista then 7 isn't going to be a big leap for you. It's got a cleaner, simpler look, it handles networking much better than XP or Vista ever did, and I was really surprised that it recognized most drivers very quickly. I loaded 7 on a 5 year old Toshiba laptop and it loaded all but one driver on the first update!!!
I think 7 is going to be a hit!!! New system, new graphics, new networking, and well worth the trip.
Go for it!!!
NO, NO, NO! I'm staying with XP after a disaster with Vista. I gave it a good try (2 months)and then restored my XP system. Thank goodness I backed up the entire disk, so I could just restore and be back HOME! Nuff said about that.
I also am running a Macbook with OS X Snow Leopard and ti runs rings around Microsoft. Am switching to Big Mac as soon as I have the bucks!
Not as long as XP is available. Better the devil you know than the one you don't. Besides, I can't afford it.
I have 2 computers: one on Win XP and the other on Linux. Between the two systems, all bases are covered - I don't need to upgrade! (Linux does everything! And I can change to a new Linux release FREE!)
So far, I have yet to see a new OS that didn't have a ton of bugs and glitches - they should give them away for the first 6 months until they get all the bugs out instead of letting us find them out after paying full retail price. To the group who will undoubtedly run out and buy this new system right away, sorry you got sucked into doing microsoft's work for free. But thanks for doing it - now when I go out 6 months or a year from now and buy it, the worst of the bugs will be fixed up thanks to your efforts.
And my XP is finally working the way I want it - mostly - and I am not a masochist. My needs have not expanded so I don't need bigger anything or faster anything. So keeping this until this one dies or my needs change, whichever comes first.
We have five computers, all used for business as well as personal purposes. Four of our primary business software go back to 2000 and 2001. Two of those no longer exist, but they are the best programs for their purpose and one holds our billing data going back 18 years. Unless Windows 7 guarantees that these programs will work on this new OS without glitches, I see no reason to take a chance. Of course, I haven't seen a reason to upgrade or change software in so many years, why would anyone change for the sake of change? My days of needing the thrill of new software are long gone, having been replaced by the sheer dread of having to spend hundreds of hours to replicate what worked. I know I speak only for myself when I say that there are times when a pencil and paper calendar surpass all the computer programs that replaced my DayTimer.
Put simply: why change something that works?

I have on several occasions Petition Microsoft, since 2003, to stop fostering its Internet innovations on me. I watched Steve Ballmer's Lauch of Windows 7, on 22 Oct 09. Nothing he said interest me, about Windows 7, (Only Open Your Wallet). Can imagine the cost for a business to upgrade and conract IT Professonals to keep systems working. Example is Windows Live E-mail, which is, nothing more of a program for friends to chat, exchange pictures, etc. Let me determine what I want, likewise, with Microsoft's Operating systems. The sad part is, there no law to stop them. XP does everything I need, and Microsoft is gonna render it obsolete in 2010, Vista 2012, with no immediate on-line support, of updates and instant fixes, rendering it obsolete, thus, forcing Window 7 upon us.
To install Win7 on XPs, you must first remove everything
off PC to external hard disk, Install Win7, then reinstall
your stuff back on manually.
I plan on waiting for a while before updating my windows XP Pro to Windows 7. I like what I've heard about Windows 7 so far, but I have lived with Windows since version 3.1 and I've learned through bad experience to expect the usual teething problems that arise from Microsoft releasing a new version of their OS upon the public long before it is really ready for seamless release.
I get the problem and I understand the money involved, but cranking out a new OS that isn't ready for prime-time has become a hallmark for Microsoft. They really need to do a lot better. I think I'll hold off for the usual Service Pack 1 or 2 before finally updating to Windows 7. Better safe than sorry.
Going back to 95 , 98 , 98se , and ME .... ME was my fave ... 99 percemt of people hated it because of glitches .. I loved it because I rarely had any BSOD's with it , not to say I didn't have any though.
It's all opinion based , and if something suits you , no matter how much a minority you are , youre gonna stick with it.
When XP came along I hated it with a vengeance , it was buggy and very unreliable , plus the driver database was very slow at coming forward. SP1 came along and I gave it another go , it was starting to be a solid OS , SP2 was next .. and from that moment on it was the OS for me .
Windows 7 ???? .. let's suck it and see ... many of us are going to install it on a trial basis and see what happens. Setting the changes aside which we'll have to get used to (renaming of our inbuilt windows apps etc) , it's stability and configurability are always gonna be what wins or loses it's fans , not forgetting what apps we know and love are gonna work with win7 is also a big issue with certain apps/program fans .
I'm definitely going to try win 7 , but tbh im going to wait afew weeks / months and hope that some of the bugs (inevitable) are worked out .
After looking at the reviews of win7 I'm positive it's going to be a fantastic OS , but as anything new goes , it needs its teething problems sorting.
Until then I'm sticking with my XP pro ...
In summary : I can see me using win7 in the near future , once things (bugs etc.) are sorted out , but I cant see me totally ditching XP just yet.
I'm not anxious to leave XP behind. And I'm not ready to shell out the money yet for Windows 7. I'm also of the understanding that making the move might be a bit difficult, though I'm a 7 on the PC experience scale. I imagine in the next year and a half, I will succumb.
I have 5 computers That I run,I run Vista on Two XP on three, I Have been working with Windows 7 since it came out so much better than vista. But I stii Love my XP Pro. I just downloaded windows 7 and installed it on my best computer. I think this might be the one to let xp go for we will see
