...who discovered that some of the Panasonic miniDV cameras can export DV footage via USB2. The URL below (see post #15) will take you to one of the threads on a DV forum a couple years ago that tipped me off to the feature which is not covered in the Panasonic documentation that I could find on the surface at least.
FWIW, when my dad found a deal on a used GS300 on flea bay, I had him simply d/l the Panny software and use movie maker to create very basic videos of his vacation DV footage. There was no learning curve compared to even something like Premiere elements, for example. I found Windows Movie Maker suited my needs as well 80-90% of the time when I wanted to quickly upload a video I created from DV footage captured from my GS500. At work I have access to a large PC/Mac lab with all the bells and whistles when I need to use the full version of Adobe Premiere.

To the OP with the Panny dv cam> The Panasonic documentation wording indicating it should work w/ XP via USB2 without additional drivers I believe only refers to transferring stills. You might try downgrading to an earlier version of Movie Maker to get the capture process to work. Anyway, I will try to locate the CD with the software and upload it (or give you a support URL for download) so you can try the Panasonic software route yourself. Believe it or not I actually found the USB DV capture process worked better on my laptop w/ Vista Home Premium than a slightly older one running XP w/ SP2. Which OS/service pack & exact Movie Maker version (2.1 or 2.6?) are you running?
Windows Movie Maker Version 2.1.4026.0.
Yep playback mode.
Post, (but using Windows Movie maker 2 The option to capture DV is grayed out and un clickable.)
ONLY .wmv formats are available.
I checked and downloaded all the drivers from Panasonic and looked at my CD, I don't see anything of which you talk about...Must be overlooking it.
Where's the thread from last year ?..Gues it don't matyter with a similar post though ![]()

Also, are you putting the camera in 'tape playback mode'(?)
If what my friend says is true, along with what I saw on the Panny support site, it's the USB transfer speed which is limited on the GS31 vs some of the other models, like my GS500 & my dad's 300. AFAIK it only transfers at USB2 *full speed* and not *high speed*. That would make it less than ideal to pass along DV footage unfortunately. When I get time I'll still post the drivers (after I locate the actual CD) so you could at least test it out w/ W Movie Maker.

Are there USB drivers available for Vista? Panasonic does not have them. Can the DV firewire be used without a driver on Vista, or are there drivers available for that.
both usb and firewire drivers are already in the operating system, no need to download them. you will need to use the firewire if you want to download minidv footage onto your computer
I got the DV cable and everything else was automatic. Now, it has imported as an AVI, which is very large, and cannot be edited by programs like movie maker and muvee, so what is a good tool to get for this, so they can be put on sites like YouTube?
i am surprised it cant be edited by wmm. what kind of file is it?
It is an AVI file.
If you want to make a DVD, import at as the AVI or DV-AVI.
If you want to put it on the web or youtube, import as something else, and or change the settings and such.
How did you import it ?. you can use Movie Maker to import it as AVI - DV-AVI and edit it, or the smaller type which is .wmv but I am not sure if youtube will change .wmv into flash...you have to check..
There are alot of programs that will edit the AVI.
Even some digital camera program like kodak...
