XP Updates

by Integrity - 10/21/09 10:53 AM

After a clean XP install I first went to the Microsoft update site, had their active-X component installed and then I copied all the KB security update numbers for my comp. I then proceeded to the update catalog and installed the active-X component there, selected all my desired updates, but could NOT download them. NOW, when I go to either of these 2 sites, I am asked to reinstall the active-X component to gain access, but it never gets installed again. Microsoft doesn't seem to be able to control the security on its own website any more!!!
Any Ideas ?

This is the error message I received:

"Internet Explorer has closed this webpage to help protect your computer
A malfunctioning or malicious add-on has caused Internet Explorer to close this webpage.
What you can do:

More information
Windows Data Execution Prevention detected an add-on trying to use system memory incorrectly. This can be caused by a malfunction or a malicious add-on.
Other things you can do:
Go online to learn about the Data Execution Prevention (DEP) security feature"

By the way, before I ever got online I already had SP3, IE8 & other KB updates installed from previously downloaded KBs from the Microsoft "Update Catalog". It was indicated on the update site that I only needed 4 new KBs to be fully updated.
Thanks for your attention.
