USB Flash drive is radically delayed showing up in SL

There is definitely something different about the way SL handles USB drives.

When I plug my flash drives into a Tiger or Leopard computer they open quickly and copy quickly.
When used with my SL MBP it is extremely slow..

Additionally, if I plug in my 8 GB flash drive it takes forever. If I use my 2 GB drive it loads and copies much more quickly, almost as well as with Tiger.

I was just trying to copy about 2 GB to my 8 GB flash and after 5 minutes of so, it had copied 50 MB and showed 11 hours to complete the copy.

There is something very different in the way SL interfaces with USB drives.
Does anyone know what is going on here?
