Best phone for college student?

by chowt8 - 10/19/09 9:18 AM

Hi,

I'm a college freshman and I currently have an LG Dare on Verizon, but I'm looking to upgrade to something new this coming Jan

Here are some problems with my Dare that I'm looking to cure with a new phone.
1.) I do a lot of texting and the keyboard is too small and I miss having a physical keyboard;less mistakes and tactile feel.

2.) internet browsing isn't awesome...its slow and it will freeze up very often.

3. )mobile e-mail won't load sometimes and our college email is on outlook -Dare does not support Microsoft exchange so I can never check it from my phone

4.) I would like to sync most of my music but the only way I know how to do that is to drag and drop my music onto the sd card and that would be really tedious to have to move each song manually every time I update my itunes.

So I'm looking for a phone with a physical keyboard (or more responsive touch keyboard) better internet browsing experience, bigger variety of emails to sync (including Microsoft outlook) and the ability to recognize and sync itunes without my music ending up as a complete mess on the phone itself. also 3.5mm head jack is a must as well as a 3.2+ mg camera. Then calendar and other apps

NO to iphone ( I want to stay on verizon)

My current considerations (and remember I can't upgrade till Jan)

Blackberry tour 9630
Blackberry storm 2
Blackberry curve 2
Motorola Sholes (can android sync itunes?)

Anything else that anyone can recommend to watch for within the next 2-3 months? or are these pretty much my only choices?

Also is wi-fi necessary

maybe look at the Touch Pro 2

It is actually a more capable device than the BBs you've mentioned. The keyboard is pretty nice too. Motorola Sholes is too new (holidays), along with Android on Verizon to know if this would necessarily suit your needs. The Tp2 covers #1 & #2 well.

#3 is a little surprising though. Are you certain your college is actually running exchange server(?) That's very expensive, FWIW. Keep in mind Outlook (the software) is separate from the type of email server/system (MS exchange). There shouldn't be any reason you cannot access your email on nearly any Verizon smartphone device if you had the configuration settings. Just take another look at your university's support pages on configuring devices.

Syncing w/ iTunes will likely require a third party software to work on Windows Mobile. That' something you can ask about at a more specialized site like howardforums. Check their Verizon sub-forums for that info.

Is it really that big of a deal not having a 3.5mm jack if you can find a miniUSB adapter for $5(?) I guess I see the Blackberries as forcing you to work around their weaknesses. IMO Windows Mobile provides you with a few more options for customizing and software.

Your thoughts?

Touch pro 2

Thanks for the recommendation!

I completely forgot about anything HTC has to offer so I'll definitely keep it in mind when I finally go to pick something new out.

I think the reason I'm set on getting a Blackberry is because i have a mac and I really like that idea that there is mac desktop manager for blackberry (and I think it gives the options now to sync itunes directly with those devices?) so that is a big selling point for me.

I double checked and I meant to say our college.edu emails are actually on Microsoft's outlook live and every time I would try to sync it with my Dare it would tell me that it wouldn't work.

but again thank you for your input!

BB & Mac

I don't think Mac has any monopoly on connecting to most smartphones ;). OTOH, you would have other options on your mac syncing with a WM phone, such as this one-

http://mac.eltima.com/sync-mac.html

Keep in mind there are a dizzying variety of software options with a WM handset, not to mention custom ROMs which can be used to tweak performance and customize your phone. I guess I sort of see your 'chains being removed' somewhat switching to a WM handset. At least check it out.

THE IMAGIO

by GEO2003 - 10/22/09 2:29 PM In reply to: Best phone for college student? by chowt8

The Imagio has about 130 reviews so far since release 10-6-09, Cnet. VerizonWireless and Phonescoop.com.
All showing 4 to 5 stars.
I would recomend you go to this sites to read the reviews yourself.
I have not found many complaints about the touch keyboard and it is very responsive.
In November 09 the Ominia 2 is expected at verizon, has a slighly bigger screan OMLED which saves power, camera with 5 mp and flash an about 8 gb of additional storage - either 8 or 16 depending on the model VZ sells.
