I have a Early 2008 White Macbook with a 160GB 5400RPM Fujitsu drive that is driving me mad. it is far too small and i have nowhere to store my RSS feeds and podcasts from iTunes anymore. also, it boots really slowly because of all the applications and HD podcasts on the drive. I am considering getting the Seagate Momentus ST9500420AS ( the one without G-Force Protection ) because it is a 7400RPM drive with a 500GB capacity. Has anybody had any problems with this drive in their macbooks or in general? Would the vibration/noise be an issue? I'm also considering the Scorpio Blue and Toshiba MK5055GSX because they're very power efficient, but at 5400RPM, they are slower. I'd love to see boot times in particular improve. There is already 2GB of RAM in the machine, so that isn't the problem. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
-Mark H
The 7200 RPM drive might run your battery down a tiny bit faster, but other than that it should be fine. They really don't sound a lot louder or anything. I am not sure how much of a speed boost you'll get for using the faster drive, but the new install of Mac OS X will definitely make it faster.
Anyway, it sounds like your on the right track.
I've ordered the Seagate... the extra speed i think is worth it.
Thanks for the advice!

The performance increase is dramatic, and the size is great. I regularly see 100MB/Sec IO in activity monitor where before I was only seeing 35MB/sec. This really sped up my virtual machines.
I am having an issue with my MBP not staying asleep after the hard disk upgrade. It goes to sleep as normal, but immediately wakes back up. I posted separately about this issue.
Any help with my MBP's insomnia is greatly appreciated!

I compared the power draw ratings for my original 250GB Hitachi disk to the new Seagate 7200.4. They were nearly identical. The newer drive does not use significantly more power than the old disk. I have not noticed a difference in battery life.
The new disk is at least as quite and vibration free and the original disk. Other than the insomnia issue I mentioned above, I don't see any down side to the fairly remarkable performance gains.
The upgrade is not very expensive compared to the performance gain.
