Just put in your Vista OS re-installation disc, reboot your computer and run a system restore from the options provided from the boot disc.

Stopping the madness

by k_tink - 10/17/09 11:55 AM In reply to: Windows update went bad, now my PC is stuck in endless updating cycle by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I've had this happen too. Soon as your desktop opens, right click the toolbar and open taskmanager. Scroll down to highlight waudt.dll or wupdmgr.exe. Then click endtask, yes,and ok. Go directly to your control panel and open Automatic updates, then click "turn off auto update". Click yes and ok and close. Open System , open Automatic Updates tab and choose "Notify me but do not auto download or install." Then open tab System restore and turn it off for your C: drive. WARNING you will lose all your restore points when you do this, so be sure that nothing else is open and youv'e got everything else working right except for this Win update thing. Ok, close the control panel, and reboot. when you reboot, You will see the shield for updates in the task bar. Ignore it for now, open control panel, System and System Restore, then turn sys. restore back on.
This should fix the problem, now open the yellow update shield and un-check the update that refuses to work and close the app by clicking the X. It will popup the question or statement, that sounds like "do not remind me or show un-unchecked updates again" Check that box and push ok.

Now you will be in charge of your up-dates, which ones your personal system and PC habits will need or not. I suggest that you open each update and click on the link "more about this up-date" It will open a browser window where you can check out the system requirements and possible problems the up-date may have. Windows is infamous for being the hyper-viligant PC Parant and ASSuming that everyone with a home PC is too stupid to save themselves and their pc from the horrors of cyberspace. This consumer has learned that while Windows suggests that you use virus protection, the majority of their security updates directly conflict with most Symantec programing. They simply do not play well with each other.
On a side note, check to see if your windows firewall is on and argueing with your true Anti virus software.
Best wishes,Tink

Did you try unplugging your computer, taking out the battery (I'm assuming its a laptop)..After taking out the battery, hold the on/off button down for 1 minute. Then replace battery, plug in, restart. Hope this helps.

Same Exact Problem

by brandonpa - 10/17/09 3:12 PM In reply to: Windows update went bad, now my PC is stuck in endless updating cycle by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Installed the update for jscript 5.8 for IE and my computer did the same thing. 100% CPU usage out of the blue, no processes running, took 4 hours for lap top to fully boot into windows and everything wasn't even loaded yet. After screwing around with turning off all windows start ups and didn't help, tracked it down to the update from Windows. Uninstalled and everything was running like normally. Went to chat support for msoft and they didn't know anything about it. They sent me the link to download the update itself without windows update and installed it and everything is still running normally. Don't know what happened with the first time, but the second time worked fine.

Crook Windows update causing crashes.

The best advice for a lifetime is to learn how to partition your hard drive when it's performing normally and store a backup image of the whole system "C" drive there. Appart from hardware failure this will fix anything in approx. ten minutes.
An easy tip, try pressing "F8" on the keyboard as soon as you start to boot up your computer. This will bring up a black screen of options one of which is to "Try the last know good start", use the up arrow to move the cursor up one line from it's default "Start Windows Normally" and select it.
If you are successful in starting the computer go to "Add and Remove Programs" and deselect the download.
If the download has seriously damaged your windows operating system and it most likely has the only sure fix it to reformat the hard drive and do a fresh install of the system. Replace all the items I'm sure you have backed up!!!
Partitioning is dangerous and exciting but a lot of fun and if you have wisely created a backup copy of the system (XP) stored externally redemption is only a few clicks away.
I apologise for sounding santimoneous (?) but there are not too many options to fix windows self inflicted injuries they are usually fatal. I have experimented with most partitioning and image creating tools available and found Acronis to be 100% relieable and easy to use. In fact it was troubles identical to yours that started me down this path. Telephone dial up downloads blew up my computer several times before I cottoned on. Also only install updates from data stored on CD and disable the automatic windows download.

A few settings need to change...

by NoellyB - 10/17/09 6:25 PM In reply to: Windows update went bad, now my PC is stuck in endless updating cycle by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

First, you need to stop the automatic updates for the moment. Click the Windows start button, then 'All Programs,' and then click 'Windows Update.' Once in there, click "Change Settings." Once you're viewing the available settings options, you want to choose the setting that is titled something akin to "Do not download and install updates," and it might say something like "Not recommended." Select that anyway.

Next, find the update in the "Update History" link over to the left. Depending on your Windows installation, it might be located elsewhere, but it's part of the Windows Update dialog screen. You should now be viewing a list of all the updates - next to each you'll see a status for each update, such as "Successful," "Failed," and "Pending."

Find the update that's been giving you trouble, and right-click on it. Choose the option akin to "Hide update." You may be asked for permission to do this, and you may have to enter an administrator password also.

This update will not bother you again - BUT, the problem is not gone at this point, you've simply stopped the updating cycle.

To actually un-install and start over, you can either do a system-restore, or you can attempt to try to uninstall the failed update, even though it wasn't installed successfully.

There's two ways I know of to do this...

1) Inside the control panel, find the 'Programs and Features' section. Once in there, find the updates and see if the troubled-update is listed. If so, uninstall it. It may be listed under the Windows components tab, or another one of the tabs (I'm going from memory here - have some patience with me).

2) This one isn't recommended for the faint of heart. Inside your Windows installation folder, you'll see other folders/directories titled something like "HOTFIX..." or "KB..." - these are the folders/directories containing the updates. Inside the folder corresponding to your troubled update, you MIGHT be able to find an uninstall program inside the directory.

If all this fails, let me know. There's a few other tricks you may be able to pull off, but try the "easy" route first. If you do need more help, please tell me which Update/Hotfix/Patch is giving you issues - it'll usually have a KB number associated with it - I'll need that. You may also want to check out that KB yourself on Google and see if anyone else is having issues with it. More often than not, you're not alone when something like this goes wrong.

NOTE: If you do fix the issue, remember to change your Windows Update settings back to something reasonable. I personally choose the "Download but don't install option" so that when updates are available, I can quickly install only those that I choose to install. I usually wait about 3-4 days before installing updates that aren't deemed critical. This way, if Microsoft has some time to find out if the patches are causing errors and releases fixes for them, the chances of me installing a bad update are lessened.

Good luck,
Noel Briggs

Repairing from Failed Windows Update

by villanim - 10/17/09 6:51 PM In reply to: Windows update went bad, now my PC is stuck in endless updating cycle by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

You might want to try installing the updates in Safe Mode. To do this, please follow the instructions below.

When the computer reboots, press F8 while it is booting up.
In the Advanced Boot Options Menu, choose Safe Mode with Networking
Once the computer boots into Safe Mode, it will hopefully install the updates that you were having problems with. If that does not work, please try the following steps to perform a system restore.

1. Insert your Windows Vista installation disc in the disc drive, and boot up your computer

2. Press a key when the message "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD shows on the screen

3. Select a language, a time and currency, and a keyboard or input method, and then click Next.

4. Click Repair your computer.

5. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, choose the drive of your Windows installation and click Next

6. At the System Recovery Options Dialog Box click on System Restore.

7. Follow the System Restore Wizard and choose the appropriate restore point.

8. Click Finish to restore the system.

Some possible solutions, there are a couple

by bobridd - 10/17/09 8:01 PM In reply to: Windows update went bad, now my PC is stuck in endless updating cycle by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

If you have a Vista DVD disk (Gateway put some of them out). Boot from the disk and try to repair, or use the fix start up , several repair functions there that you can use. There is a system restore feature there also.

You may also try booting into other options using the f8 key and choosing Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking and then try to uninstall the last update if you know what it is.

That should give you a place to start.

You could try loading your Laptop or PC in safe mode by tapping the f8 key as your machine is loading and choose safe mode once in safe mode go to system restore and go back to before this update came in and Turn off updates so not to let this happen again.

Vista updates

by rowal - 10/18/09 1:07 AM In reply to: Windows update went bad, now my PC is stuck in endless updating cycle by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hi Susannah.
This is usually caused by a corrupt update download.
These downloads are stored in C:Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Download.
Opening that folder and deleting everything in it should give you a clean slate to start checking for updates again.
You may have to go to Tools/FolderOptions/View and check the button 'Show hidden files and folders' in order to find the folder you are after.
Good luck.

Better don't let nothing active

Hello !!!
I just saw your post, about this trouble with the Windows Vista. But the real problem isn't the operating system, sure. The cause of your nightmare are the UPDATES. I recomend you to format your system, install it again, and let the automatic EVIL updates OFF. Trust me, dear, it's not a good choice to validate all of them. Many are corrupted, and cause much more troubles than solutions.
