Sorry I don't know how to stop this. I presume you have tried safemode.
Find a way to wipe the hard drive and reload. There is an external cable connector the allows you to connect almost any hard drive via USB on another computer. This will allow you to extract all your valuable information. I use this device as a tech quit often, usually to see if a drive is still operating.
Once you save your data format the drive, put is back in the original computer and run your recovery disk.

Susannah, Your not the only one. Same thing happened to me three weeks ago. I had to use a system restore disk and lost all my pictures, emails etc because I was stupid for not backing up.
Hope unlike me you backed up because your probably going to have to reformat.
If you removed the HD and attached it to a working Computer, you might have been able to recover the Data. That failing, install a new HD into the Laptop, install Vista, create the same User Name and Password, and attach the old HD externally to recover your Data.
I have a customer that had the same thing happen to his laptop. So I had no option but to do a complete system restore, but it just sits there for hours. Unfortunetly Gateway as well as most other manufactures do not ship the restore disk's with the computer anymore. So his only option is to call and order the disk which take about a week to arrive. My suggestion to anyone buying a new computer is to make a set of restore disk's as soon as you get the new computer up and running so that you have them just in case.
If "it just sits there for hours.", consider the Hard Drive. These fail frequently on Laptops, for obvious reasons.
Many Laptops have Hard Drive checking utilies built right into the BIOS. Otherwise you may have to remove the HD and attach it to a working Computer to test it, as well as to copy the all-important Data.
I have repaired several machines that have in this predicament. I will be giving you some shortcuts that are typical but can vary in some brands. First fix is stopping the reboot on error using a BIOS setting. As soon as the PC starts tap the F2 key and work way through the computer setup screens then find entry to uncheck that says to the effect of "restart on error". Save this and continue to boot, if you land on a blue screen copy the error code information. You can use another computer to search Microsoft or Google for a remedy. You may attempt to boot to the last known good configuration. The next alternative is to boot in safemode, run MSCONFIG, remove the offending entry if possible then boot normally. The next solution involves much more work and will wipe out everything. Most newer PCs have a boot option, F11, to recover original Windows. This is a format and reinstall of Vista the same as new, with crapware and all. If your data is not backed up you will need to remove the harddrive, make a slave drive on another PC temporarily and retrieve your data.
I had a similar problem. For me, turns out I had installed an old dial up modem I wanted to use for faxing. I never got it to work, but then forgot it was in there. When I finally remembered and removed it, all went very well. So if you can't restore to a previous state and nothing else works, you might try removing a piece of hardware that the machine can spare, one at a time, to see if that's the problem.
i had a similar problem with windows update....it installed these updates and then my laptop wouldn't turn on properly it kept restarting but i used system restore to get it back to normal. you press some key combination when your PC starts up and then you can use system restore...that's what i would recommend if you can...
Aloha,
This always happens when Windows Task Manager is set to manual in Services.msc and not to automatic. Click on Start, then Run, type services.msc. Scroll down to Task Manager, right click it, click on properties and change the manual setting to automatic. Instead of re-booting, click on 'start the service' and your update (s) should go through.
This happens once i a while, sometimes relating to an inherent system instability that you may not have been aware of.
Try starting the computer in safe made by pressing the F8 key and restore your system to a time preceding the system update.
Try booting in safe mode and if possible go to add remove programs and unistall your last update, then reboot again.
At least with windows XP you can do this not sure for Vista.
Try pressing F8 while the computer is starting up. You may have to tap it intermittently instead of just holding it down. A screen should come up asking whether you want to start it normally, safe mode, safe mode with networking...choose safe mode..say yes if it asks you if you want to continue in safe mode once it boots. Yoy should be able to go into programs, accessories, system tools..and then choose system restore. You should choose an earlier date than the updates. DO NOT do a system recovery..it will wipe out all your pictures, music, or any programs you installed..just do a system restore to an earlier date. Your computer should reboot and be fine.
