Where are the installation files downloaded to??

by ankitsinghal1238 - 10/6/09 11:15 PM

Hi! I am a newbie to this forum. I did a lot of surfing on this issue.
But I couldn't find a solution. My simple take is this.

I am using Windows 7 RC 32 bit and have 2 GB RAM.

Nowadays, the customers like me are given online installations for softwares. Perhaps this is to facilitate those customers who want to click just one button and have the software installed at their pcs. But the place where I live has very slow broadband connections and thus its not possible to download and install the software each time I format my pc or the s/w becomes corrupted.
So I wanted to know - how can I know where the currently downloading/downloaded installation files are stored, so that I can grab them myself and keep them separately as an offline installation file for future reference.
If I'm not wrong the installer that these sites provide delete the installation files as soon as there job is done.

From now on . . .

don't click "run". Click Save, and note where.

When you download a program and click Run, the program is stored in some Temp directory, and if the software is any good, it erases it. When you click Save, you can designate where the program is downloaded to and after installation, store the installer wherever you want.

If you accidentally forget to use the "save" button and you cant figure out where it is at simply go through the process again and click save. It will show you most times where it is going to install it and then you can click cancel and go to that spot and it should be there.

GOOD LUCK

Question updated: Where are the installation files....

Thanks for the reply guys!!

I'm sorry, I failed to mention one thing. By online installation, I mean that the companies first make us download their own download accelerator and then through this they download their software to the client. After downloading although the accelerator remains as an ActiveX add on onto my system, the installation files of the software get removed. Thus, I cannot re-install it again without going into the download process again.
Thanks.

Browser?

by mrlemarquis - 10/17/09 12:09 AM In reply to: Where are the installation files downloaded to?? by ankitsinghal1238

Firstly - what Browser are you using? In Google Chrome for example, although you can still designate WHERE you want to save the download to, there is also the automatic download to the page on Chrome "downloads" - accessible by clicking on the little spanner - top right of the Browser page. The same tool is used (under "advanced options") to select the place you want downloads to be sent to (the desktop is my favourite and I open it from there and/or send it to "My Documents" or an external memory for later use or installation on another PC). It's been so long since I used IExplorer, that I'm not too sure, but I imagine the title "Options" must be somewhere on the IExplorer page.
It's easier to ALWAYS click "SAVE" rather than "OPEN" after download, and gives you the chance to check the download with your Anti-virus programme as well as having it always available for use if needed.
Last point - unless you've got an enormous hard drive, don't forget to "empty the Browser Cache" regularly and/or empty the "temporary Internet Folders file" (you can do this very easily by running the integrated Windows "clean disk" programme under "accessories" - if you haven't got a better programme, like "CCleaner")
