Vista Hungs up...

by pedro cosmo - 10/16/09 9:12 PM In reply to: Windows update went bad, now my PC is stuck in endless updating cycle by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Yep I got the same problem..
I did re-started in SAFE mode and did a restore to te most ancient entry I found. Once restored I turned off the wireless switch.. went to destop.. "windows Update".. and cancelled all updates.
Turned the wireless on and all is well... BUT sometimes.. I could NOT find out when... the misserable Vista turns, by itself, "on" the ugrades selection.. and I had to do the whole thing again (3 tiemes..) Gates your company realy sucks!

Pardon me,

for, this may not be a solution but this is one of those moments when I feel that some of the earlier operating systems were better. I am no expert, but, logically, in many of the earlier OSs the thing to do would have been to boot using boot up CD (or boot CD as it is also called) and then do a system restore to an earlier date (a date before the update was effected. Please remember to remove the boot CD just when the computer is restarting after the system restore is effected). Of course, this would work only if the system restore has not been turned off, though and if you have a boot CD. I don't know if it will work on Vista.

Viva La Vista !!

by plevyrjp - 10/16/09 9:23 PM In reply to: Windows update went bad, now my PC is stuck in endless updating cycle by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

My laptop with Windows "Vista Home Premium" does the same thing when-ever I try to shut down it trys to default to the setting for "Install Windows Update and shut down".Then it will run untill the next morning and never had installed the Windows Update. If you look at your update records file it shows many of the most recent updates and if they failed or not, mine showed the same update installation attempt about fifteen times.I just can't wait for the new & improved Windows"7".....NOT !!

Stuck PC, Windows 7RC may help you.

by grichardt - 10/16/09 10:19 PM In reply to: Windows update went bad, now my PC is stuck in endless updating cycle by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

If you were wise enough and fortunate enough to have downloaded a free copy of Windows 7RC when it was available, the install CD has a very functional repair feature that may be able to pull your chestnuts from the fire and save your bacon. I was able to restore a crashed and non functioning Vista install using it. Additionally, after a power blip corrupted the boot sector of a Windows 7RC/Vista dual boot, the repair function was able to find a backup I had made and restore everything to a before crash status.

Please mention all the details about your pc configuration along with the operating system with the service pack and antivirus software and any other security software installed so that a problem specific help could be made available. Also mention the date of occurence of the problem.

Safe Mode

by Basuto9 - 10/16/09 11:49 PM In reply to: Windows update went bad, now my PC is stuck in endless updating cycle by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

My thought is the same as most of the posters - start in "safe mode". Good old F8 helps every time - then you can work on the problem itself. One other thing - shut off the automatic feature of MS Downloads and create restore points before any major change you decide to let MS do (it doesn't sound like a simple 400KB upgrade to Windows Defender to me).

Windows updates

by mrlemarquis - 10/16/09 11:52 PM In reply to: Windows update went bad, now my PC is stuck in endless updating cycle by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I too had a couple of problems with the latest updates. Firstly it took an eternity to "install" downloaded updates - then a window opened saying "verifying file content" which never moved - then finally I was told installation complete, after which I found that the update had changed various things on my desktop, notably "outlook" instead of the original "outlook express" as mail client!
It (Windows) also tried to download and install the same updates again, so I tried going to the "automatic update" setting (on Control Panel) and changed from "automatic" to "turned off". I then went to the Windows update page and ran "check for updates" which told me it had found 16 updates necessary. I checked them against the already installed (using the "add/delete" option in control panel) and found they had all been installed already!
I went back to the update page and "hid updates" - checked that the "automatic updates" option was still turned off and rebooted.
The problem seemed to have disappeared, but then this is Windows.....!

Constant re-booting

by SkippyW30 - 10/17/09 12:01 AM In reply to: Windows update went bad, now my PC is stuck in endless updating cycle by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

This happened to me as well. Not on an upgrade, but on one of those endless Windows updates that they make you download every day or so. I was caught in a loop where the PC kept re-booting.

I had to go into the "restore point" just after the machine starts to boot up and put things back to where they were. It was the only way. Every time I let the PC do it's "thing" and bring up the desktop, it re-booted and started the process all over again.

I hope this helps.

Windows update went bad, now PC is stuck in endless update

by nhoj1 - 10/17/09 1:18 AM In reply to: Windows update went bad, now my PC is stuck in endless updating cycle by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

This has happened to me twice. What I did eventually was to start windows in safe mode and then use system restore to a point before the dodgy update and then hid that update when it tried to download it again.Good luck

maybe caused by windows Genuine Advantage,
but if You can use the program without updating,as I do,
than You do as I did, open windows update,You see open important updates,
than make it/them to hidden update, than just restart and it has goon.

a suggestion

by fabianhow - 10/17/09 2:55 AM In reply to: Windows update went bad, now my PC is stuck in endless updating cycle by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I encountered this problem before, but in a different manner. After installing updates, I ran System Restore and the updates were removed, and it too was stuck in an endless update cycle, but I was able to enter Windows. The fix I used was to manually download every single update from the Microsoft website and install them manually. To find the update which failed, (for Vista) go to Windows Update, click on Installed Updates, click on the update which failed. It will bring you to a support page where you can download the update manually. For XP, go to update.microsoft.com, click on update history and click on the update which failed. Install it and it should work. This is not recommended if you are installing many updates (in my case, I had just reinstalled Vista, had to manually download 30+ updates). Hope this helps :)

Windows Update 3rd Install Failure

by ARB123 - 10/17/09 4:30 AM In reply to: Windows update went bad, now my PC is stuck in endless updating cycle by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

In my experience, which in the past has meant a complete reinstallation of Windows, this happened because the driver software is not up to date. Windows do warn you about this! Check your drivers first.
