Try the Startup Repair Function

by rpersen - 10/16/09 6:20 PM In reply to: Windows update went bad, now my PC is stuck in endless updating cycle by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Try the Startup Repair to correct any missing or corrupt files that may be causing this issue. If you don't have an installation disc, then there are instructions for using the preinstalled version of this tool. Here's an article that may help:

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/5c59f8c1-b0d1-4f1a-af55-74f3922f3f351033.mspx#EX

If this doesn't work, then you contact your OEM to obtain an installation disc, and reinstall.

Safe Mode and System Restore

by danmeyer - 10/16/09 6:41 PM In reply to: Windows update went bad, now my PC is stuck in endless updating cycle by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Boot in Safe Mode by tapping F8 key when your computer first starts.. Select Safe Mode and do a System Restore. Start -Search- System Restore. Windows Update automatically creates a restore point before installing any update in case anything goes wrong with the installation.

Windows Update causes shutdown reboot loop

by yangontha - 10/24/09 9:05 PM In reply to: Safe Mode and System Restore by danmeyer

I have encountered similar situation with a new Toshiba Notebook with Vista. The user has been using for about a week when this happens. The update is at step 3 of 3 and 0% completed and shut down.
I tried to reboot in safe mode. Before safe mode started it also shuts down. I can't start Windows in any mode.
To complicate the matters, I have installed a hard disk encryption software.
So when I reported to Toshiba, they replied me that it is not their problem.

Finally, I have to reinstall as Factory Setting.

Endless Updates

by purposed - 10/16/09 6:45 PM In reply to: Windows update went bad, now my PC is stuck in endless updating cycle by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

The messages preceding mine regarding "System Restore" (particularly one which referenced Vista rather than XP) are good suggestions.

Here's just one more detail that may prove helpful. It turns out that hitting F8 just right can be problematic. So, I recommend powering up the computer, then within about 10 seconds start pressing the F8 key about once every two seconds. That way you won't be so early that the keystroke buffer gets reset during boot, and you won't be so late that Windows takes over causing you to have missed the opportunity.

If the computer starts beeping at you every time you press F8, the keystroke buffer is full. You may as well stop because that's all you can do for this particular try. Furthermore, it will likely get you into Safe Mode. If not, power down, wait 15 seconds and power up again. This time wait a little longer before starting the F8 keypress process.

Restore point

by arev11 - 10/16/09 6:50 PM In reply to: Windows update went bad, now my PC is stuck in endless updating cycle by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

You should be able to go to a restore date before the updates started. Control panel,System and Maintenance, create a restore point, set a restore date and time from when everything was ok.
If you can do this make sure you do not have the option to update automatically and then just update the ones you want to.
I am not an expert but think this should help you

Windows Update Problems

by jacksaul1 - 10/16/09 6:51 PM In reply to: Windows update went bad, now my PC is stuck in endless updating cycle by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Microsoft has established a phone number for Windows Update problems. The service is free and I have made use of it on two occasions.
1-866-PCSAFETY
Call them for assistance first before any other extreme measures.

Problems like this emphasize why it is almost mandatory to make frequent backups using a program such as Acronis TrueImage.

PCSafety is a toll-free telephone number provided by Microsoft technical support. PCSafety Support is intended for the home user. PCSafety helps customers remove malware infections such as viruses, spyware (including unwanted software), and adware. It also helps customers protect their computers by using Windows Firewall, Windows Defender, and Windows Update.

The number can be contacted by dialing toll free (in North America) 1-866-727-2338 (or (866) PC-SAFETY).

if you are using counterfeited operating system microsoft can detect it thru windows updates. if you accepted the automatic downloads that`s the time your problem begins.after you repair your system using restore point see to it that you disable your automatic update in your security center located in your control panel.but if your restore point and search and help program already been corrupted you should reformat your system.

Buy an IMAC, just joking

by morris.davis - 10/23/09 6:10 PM In reply to: Windows Update Problems by jacksaul1

I have both machines (Win & Mac) and they both hang up.
The Apple just don't do it as much (once in 12 months).

I hope Windows 7 is better than Vista, because I got to buy it for my Win machine.

Hang ups and Apples

by jwpw - 10/24/09 8:19 AM In reply to: Buy an IMAC, just joking by morris.davis

I've used a PC (dos then windows) since 1984 ......Apples may hang but they don't drop (pun intended). I bought an iMAC 2 years ago (next month) and it has never faltered - and I would do it again. I do not run Windows on it, although I do keep an XP machine off line, to access older files when I need them.

Like so many others, I was tired of playing the MS tech support game for so many years.
