Poll: When it comes to a new PC, do you build or buy?

by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator - 10/16/09 3:18 PM

When it comes to a new PC, do you build or buy?

- I build it myself. (Please explain why you do it.)
- I have someone else build it. (Why not do it yourself?)
- I buy it preconfigured, right off the shelf. (If you
knew how, would you build one yourself?)
- I buy it online, but customize the configuration. (If you
knew how, would you build one yourself?)
- Other. (What do you do?)

Custom order online

I only use Macs so I can't build a system myself, but I usually will custom configure any Mac I buy on Apple's website.

I go to the online Dell outlet and find one with everything that I need and more while get away pretty much dirt cheap. I have also purchased several Apple computers and ipods that are refurbished from the online Apple store at a considerable savings.

Just like Lee Koo, it's Dell Outlet for me

by skottieg - 10/16/09 5:32 PM In reply to: Other by shockedme

I always head to Dell outlet http://www.dell.com/outlet and see what is available there. I've done this for my last 4 pc's (and two gift pc's!) and have not been disappointed. You can choose processor, chassis, peripherals, etc. If something is not quite right, it is easy/cheap enough to replace. I hate to sound like a commercial, but I do love it.

Only if you like refurbished parts.

Check out www.newegg.com if you don't like refurbished parts. There you can get NEW parts for same price as dells refurbs and come with a better warranty. I know alot of people like dell but I just can't bring myself to pay extra for a name!

Build it myself

by djFLWB - 10/16/09 5:07 PM In reply to: Poll: When it comes to a new PC, do you build or buy? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

My first computer was build to spec. I've never bought off the shelf or through a site like Dell.

After that I built my own. It isn't difficult. You get exactly what you want at the budget you can afford and there's a certain amount of pride when you can say, "Hey I did it myself."

Plus you know exactly what you have and what it's capable of...and most importantly how to fix it!!!!

Pc,build or buy

by nikonman50 - 10/16/09 5:21 PM In reply to: Poll: When it comes to a new PC, do you build or buy? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

You Buy. But get a Mac instead. After six pc's starting with windows 3.1 and having them crash, freeze. and just lock up. I thought I would try a Mac. It has not even blinked in over a year. I do have a 500 gig ex hard drive attached. Just to cover the thousands photos I have taken. I am not just slamming pc's. But if you are not happy with pc's. Try one out. You may be happy. Just my thoughts. Not apple's.

MAC Vs PC for an Indian Villager

by drrasheed - 10/30/09 7:48 PM In reply to: Pc,build or buy by nikonman50

Being an Indian it is unimaginable to possess a MAC because of the lack of support and cost. An assembled PC gives me options of my choice as to the hardware configurations. But for a MAC it is fixed I understand. I belong to Kerala state in India, in a small village

Build It Myself

by Honeybunkle - 10/16/09 5:34 PM In reply to: Poll: When it comes to a new PC, do you build or buy? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have been building PC's for myself and family for the last 10 years. After purchasing my last pre-built Dell and spending a lot of time upgrading and changing it, I decided that I would build my next machine. I was able to build it one step below the latest, fastest and greatest for less than what I could buy a pre-built model with what I wanted. I have been doing it ever since and will continue doing it as long as I am able to purchase the components as a reasonable cost. Many times in the past I have been able to re-use disk drives, sound cards, CD-ROM drives, DVD drives, cases, and power supplies in the new machine saving costs. In most cases the software you need can be obtained for free by down loading it from the Web. Many times hardware vendors will sell you the OEM version of a new operating system at a discount when purchasing hardware from them. Build it yourself and you can have what you want at a good price.

Been building myself starting with digital group Z80

by w8tqz - 10/17/09 9:51 AM In reply to: Build It Myself by Honeybunkle

My first computer was a digital group. That's a kit where you solder the parts on the cards.
My first IBM style was an XP running at 8.00 Mhz. it was complete except for the drive. The display card was trouble and had to be replaced. Now I replace my motherboard about every three years.
I can't afford a whole computer at once. I keep adding hard drives HDTV cards etc. Finally I made other computers from cast off parts from my main computer. My next addition will be Windows 7 64bit. Stuff that won't work or I have no use for go to Good Will.

I configure what I want built for me

by rhomp2002 - 10/16/09 5:43 PM In reply to: Poll: When it comes to a new PC, do you build or buy? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

My mechanical ability is somewhere between zero and zip. I figure out what I want my computer to be and then order it configured that way. Works for me very well and I have had no problems with the 3 of them I have done this with at all. Highly recommended way of getting exactly what I want and since I picked a good company to build it the PC holds up very well. My current one is going on 5 years.

It is easy to build a PC

by xlrb - 10/16/09 5:50 PM In reply to: Poll: When it comes to a new PC, do you build or buy? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

There are plenty of how to sites available, excellent sources of materials online, and in the end when one builds it then you know it well enough to fix it.

ARE CNET READERS AVERAGE?

by pameyer - 10/16/09 5:52 PM In reply to: Poll: When it comes to a new PC, do you build or buy? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

40% build their computer themselves? I doubt it represents the average PC/MAC user! We, CNET readers, must be special!

Special?

by mwooge - 10/16/09 7:49 PM In reply to: ARE CNET READERS AVERAGE? by pameyer

I buy mine off the shelf. But I'm special anyway.

Is there an emoticon for a smug expression?

Build or Buy

by stiefr - 10/16/09 5:55 PM In reply to: Poll: When it comes to a new PC, do you build or buy? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I would love to build my own just for the experience. Unfortunately because of my movement disorders (Parkinson's & Familial Tremor) I'm afraid to even try. I know things are much more modular today than when I was younger but I don't know if that has eliminated the need for fine motor coordination. I'm on disability so I can't afford costly screw-ups. Any thoughts from those who build on whether it would be worth my time to give it a try?
