It can be done, but it is a pain.

First off, make sure you don't have any malware, scan with:
1. Malwarebytes anti-malware
2. Avast
3. Adaware Aniversary Edition Free
These are the best, some like A-squared or SuperAntiSpyware, take your pick.
Is IE7 still available to download?
If I'm upgrading from IE6 right to IE8, I won't have IE7 on my computer to revert to if I have problems with it.
Thanks.
I had the same probs w/IE8. I uninstalled it and used FF to go to windows update and d/l ie7. When you try to uninstall ie8, the warnings will pop up all over the place. Just continue and, as I said use Firefox to get to windows update and 7 will install no problem.
As noted, IE8 is not yet stable, and will not work with some web sites.
I was able to remove IE8 and reinstall IE7 without difficulty.
I use Firefox 99% of the time, but must use IE7 for a particular site essential to my work that Firefox cannot handle for unknown reasons. On the rare occasions when I use IE7, I am amazed how far below Firefox it is, especially considering Firefox extensions and add-ons to automate so many essential chores.
I was a bit skeptical about upgrading to IE8 myself, but so far, I have encountered only one very slight problem with one website after the upgrade. Perhaps you'll tell me that I need to go to more sites.
Overall, I have found 8 to be an improvement, its features more convenient.
There is only one option in 8 I miss. When you have the favorites bar displayed at top, this can't be moved to the right side as with previous versions.
On my PC I can remove IE8 and revert to IE7. IE8 is listed on Add/Remove programmes as Windows Internet Explorer 8.
Got into IE8 because i'm obedient and MS told me to. Only minor irritation is that you have to use "compatibility" button for some websites, but most are getting updated.
Thanks for the discussion.
Struggling with the same questions and doubts.
I also just want to report my experience with an unstable IE7, which has been around for the last few months or so. My standard browser is FF, but I do have some weird problems with that on certain sites, so I still use IE regularly. The problem I have had is that IE7 will not find the connection with the internet, *if* I start it up after loading FF and other applications on my PC. IE tries to go to a site via its IP address, rather than the actual domain name, but does not succeed. Result, after minutes of trying, is a page load error. Weird.
Apart from that I have regular instant crashes with IE, which in fact also occur with FF. Crash behaviour is that the app disappears in a split second, followed by the microsoft error reporting message.
I am running a 6 month old PC, Intel Quad CPU, 4 Gb RAM, etc.
OS is XP SP3.
At the moment still wondering whether I should upgrade to IE8...
OK, to me.... just my opinion mind you. IN true Microsoft fashion, they took something that was functional, that everybody was used to, and for any lack of common sense & someone in design trying to justify their jobs.... changed EVERYTHING!... Idiots!
We got stuck with 7 at work, which is why I'm still using 6, you cant' move the address bar up & down to whatever line you want it on, icons are different or gone completely, nothing is as it has been and there was no reason to change it and then Take Away the user's ability to put things where they want them! Since the forward/back buttons are now permantly stuck in the upper left corner, I now can't drag the address bar into the dead space to the right of those buttons to save space, the refresh button is gone, everything is moved or missing! 7 may in fact be more secure, but untill the design people at Microsoft quit fixing things that are NOT broken I'm going to stick with 6 untill the browser works like it's supposed to/so I can adjust things to where I want them, not where MS wants them. And YES, Firefox is the BEST alternative browser, works great, looks great, self updates, and yet they too have infused unwanted things into their browser, when you click on the address bar it brings down your entire favorites menu, sorry but for me, if I want to look in favorites.... I'll click on favorites!!! The address bar should only show a list of where you've been recently, untill you clear it out! Why can't Microsoft make IE 8 or 9,10,25...whatever... to look & be adjustable like 6 without all the bs changes!???? It's like the idiots in department stores, just when you finally figure where every thing is, some idiot says lets move all of it again!
I too used IE6 and Xp Sp3
A big chunk of space is use by the fused tool bars in IE7 & 8 it seems that only us males don't care about all the stupid extra gadget's.
I only have one tool bar across with only the necessary button for web surfing.
I had fixed pc's for friends and family here and there and it never fails. The computers are always load it with crap and garbaje programs of all kinds. The main reason of why this pc's are brought to me to fix on the first place., there are no longer working properly due to the excess of tool bars, adware, spyware programs the get loaded mainly when they install somekind of software like the infamous internet free games that installs those extra programs without the user knowledge and on top of that a tool bar of somekind for easy access to their website.
And if you are worried about security by using IE7 OR 8.........
Don't go online who said that the internet was secured.........
They are lying to everyone. Use it at your own risk.
Well said, nothing like a 1990s-style hard-coded UI where the user is not allowed to move menu items, native toolbars, and toolbar buttons etc. to WHERE THE USER WANTS THEM.
Couldn't agree more about the upgrade from IE 6.0 to 7.0; Watzman has hit all the nails right on the head. Tabbed browsing is right up there with round wheels & sliced bread--once you get used to it, you won't know how you managed without.
IE 8 currently has compatibility issues not only with other websites but with alot of software/add ons you might want or need; or wait for improvements. Although Microsoft claims you can set it to allow your programs to run, I did not find that to be the case with ANY program that was being blocked.
I installed it at work, and had to un-install it, because it interfered so badly with programs I have to use; same at home, with programs I want to use (completely different applications).
So if you do decide to try it, be prepared to uninstall if you run into conflicts; or just wait and see if Microsoft addresses the problem.
I have been using IE7 since shortly after General Availability and very much disliked it at first. I found out that it was a simple selection to disable tabs and everything has been fine for me since. I have also been using IE8 with Windows 7 beta and RC and I cannot recommend IE8 to my worst enemy. I have continual "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" messages, freeze-ups, "cannot open webpage", and other problems. Wait a few months before frustrating yourself with IE8. Maybe one day they will get it smoothed out, but not yet.
If you don't like tabbed browsing, you either don't know how to use it or it was not well configured when you tried it out (which is very likely; it is poorly configured by default, in my opinion).
Late versions of Netscape had tabbed browsing before it became FireFox. Microsoft fought it and then adopted it, and everyone I know who has had it (and had it properly configured) and been shown how to use it loves it and would never give it up (and many of them thought that they either hated it or at least it was something that they simply didn't need). Give it another try, and play with the configuration (it's under Tools / Internet settings / tabs / settings).
I have found NO problems with IE8--just more security!!
